CAT 2026 Snapshot
The Common Admission Test (CAT) is India's largest MBA entrance exam, taken by over 3 lakh candidates every year for admission to the 21 IIMs and 1,000+ other top business schools. CAT 2026 is conducted by IIM Indore on Sunday, 29 November 2026. Your CAT percentile is the single most important number for an IIM call, which is exactly what this predictor estimates.
Key dates
CAT runs on a fixed annual cycle: registration opens in early August, the exam is on the last Sunday of November, and results arrive in the first week of January.

Exam structure
CAT 2026 has 68 questions across three sections, worth 204 marks, in 120 minutes. Each section is timed separately at 40 minutes and you cannot move between them. The test mixes MCQs with type-in-the-answer (TITA) questions that have no options.

What to study
CAT has no officially published syllabus, but the topics are well established from past papers. Here is what each section tests:
VARCVerbal Ability & Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension is most of the section (around 16 of 24 questions), with 3 to 4 passages. Verbal Ability is mostly TITA.
DILRData Interpretation & Logical Reasoning
The most unpredictable section, and it often decides who crosses 95+ percentile.
QAQuantitative Ability
Arithmetic dominates, so it rewards strong fundamentals over advanced tricks.
The math
Because CAT is held in three slots of differing difficulty, your raw marks are first normalised onto a common scale, then converted into a percentile. Your percentile is simply the percentage of candidates who scored at or below you: a 95 percentile means you did better than 95% of all test-takers.
One point many aspirants get wrong: your overall percentile comes from your overall normalised score, not from averaging your three sectional percentiles. That is why strong sections can still give a different overall number. In this predictor, overall percentile and category are required, while sectional percentiles are optional but sharpen the estimate.
Score targets
How many marks does a percentile take? It shifts yearly with difficulty, but these are reliable planning estimates for the General category (overall, out of 204):
| Percentile | Approx. marks | Competition | What it opens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 99.5 | 100 and above | IIM A, B, C range | |
| 99 | 85 to 90 | Older IIMs, FMS | |
| 95 | 62 to 66 | Many first-gen IIMs | |
| 90 | 55 to 58 | Newer and baby IIMs | |
| 85 | 48 to 52 | Some newer IIMs | |
| 80 | 42 to 46 | Non-IIM B-schools |
Approximate, for planning only. Scores for the same percentile vary by slot and year. Reserved categories need fewer marks for the same call.
Who can apply
CAT eligibility is deliberately broad. You can apply if you meet these conditions:
Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates).
Final-year students and those awaiting results can apply, and are admitted provisionally.
Professional qualifications such as CA, CS or CMA are accepted as equivalent.
There is no age limit and no cap on attempts, though CAT is held only once a year.
