In total there are 26 IIIT colleges in India, but there is only one college of IIIT Hyderabad, which is confirmed to provide B. Tech lateral entry programs. International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad is the only IIIT that offers a Lateral Entry Entrance Examination (LEEE) for a specific dual-degree program

The IIIT lateral entry program is a unique program where students can get direct admission into the prestigious B.Tech and MS by Research Dual Degree Program at the IIIT Hyderabad.  After qualifying the LEEE exam you can get admission in the B.Tech and MS by Research Dual Degree Program which is a 4-year integrated program 

The IIIT Hyderabad Lateral Entry is a 4-year integrated dual degree program. Students join directly in the third year, and after finishing the course, they receive two degrees: B. Tech (Honors) and M.S. by Research. It is a program that suits ambitious learners who want to learn excellent technical skills with the best research excellence and achieve academic depth as well as relevance in the industry within a well-organized program in a limited space.

IIIT Hyderabad

IIIT Hyderabad also provides the Lateral Entry Entrance Examination (LEEE). The entry test is the gateway to a dual degree course for engineering students who desire to join the best institute. On completing the B.Tech, the applicants are allowed to proceed to the Master of Science. It is an integrated 4-year program. Primarily, the LEEE entrance exam is selected by the candidates who have a great desire to research and desire to change the university for their B.Tech program.

 Dual-degree programs offered by IIIT Hyderabad in the specializations: 

Computer Science and Engineering (CSD):

  • B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering
  • MS by Research in Computer Science and Engineering

Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECD):

  • B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • MS by Research in Electronics and Communication Engineering

In such a way, the program may be enrolled in by the learners who study Computer Science, Electronics, and Communication, and are interested in research. The programs are tailored to combine the coursework of the undergraduate and research and build the program to give students a holistic education which is ready them to be in a high capacity within the academic and industrial field.

Examination Details

The LEEE comprises two main components:

Examination Details

Aptitude Test (60 minutes)

  • General Aptitude
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Basic Mathematics

Subject Test (120 minutes)

  • For CSD Applicants: Topics include C programming, data structures, algorithms, discrete mathematics, and digital logic.
     
  • For ECD Applicants: Topics include Circuit Theory and Networks, Electronic Devices and Circuits, Signals and Systems, and Digital Logic.

*The examination is computer-based and consists of multiple-choice questions. There is a negative marking of 25% for incorrect answers.

Eligibility Criteria for the IIIT Hyderabad Lateral Entry Program 

To be eligible for the Lateral Entry at IIIT Hyderabad, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • He/she must have completed 2 Years of an Undergraduate Engineering Program (B.Tech)
  • Candidates should have completed two years of their B.E./B.Tech program

Academic Background:

With respect to Computer Science: Applicants should possess a degree in Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI and ML), and/Data Science.

In case of electronics and communication, the applicants should possess a degree in electronics and communication engineering, electronics and telecommunications engineering, electrical and instrumentation engineering, or electrical and electronics engineering, or in some of its branches.

In case of minimum academic qualification: The candidates have to have 80 percent or 8.0 CGPA in the 3rd semester. 

Application Process for the IIIT Hyderabad Lateral Entry Program: 

The Lateral Entry Examination (LEEE) entails the following procedures: 

  • To fill the admission form, go to the IIIT Hyderabad admission website. 
  • After the registration, the candidates must fill out the application form with all the required information. 
  • The application fee is 3000, which is non-refundable, and payment can be made online or through net banking. 
  • After the final submission of the form and once payment has been made then you can download and print the confirmation page and all the necessary documents. 

IIIT Hyderabad Interviews

The shortlisted candidates who are going to participate in the online interview have been decided according to their performance in the entrance test. The interview determines the aptitude of the research, the problem-solving skills, and the motivation of the potential candidate to work in the dual-degree program. The timeframe of the interview is the last week of May, and the findings will be published in June.

Fee Structure of IIIT Hyderabad

The fee structure for the dual-degree programs is as follows:

  • Tuition Fee: INR 450,000 per annum
  • Hostel and Mess Fees: Approximately INR 50,000 per semester
  • Initial Fee Payment: INR 10,000 non-refundable fee along with the first semester tuition fee of INR 2,25,000

Syllabus for the LEEE Exam

This is a general syllabus for both CSE & ECE students

General Mathematics 

  • Linear Algebra
    • Working with matrices (tables of numbers)
    • Finding the rank of a matrix
    • Understanding and using determinants
    • Learning about eigenvalues and eigenvectors
  • Probability
    • Basic rules of probability
    • Understanding CDF (Cumulative Distribution Function)
    • PDFs and PMFs (for continuous and discrete random variables)
    • Finding averages and other properties (moments) of random variables
    • How the functions of random variables work

Knowing key probability distributions:

  • Binomial, Bernoulli, Geometric, Poisson
  • Gaussian (Normal) and Exponential distributions

Calculus

  • Basic integration and differentiation
  • Understanding limits, continuity, and when functions are smooth (differentiable)
  • Learning when series converge or diverge
  • Finding maximum and minimum values of functions
  • Important theorems like the Mean Value Theorem
  • Partial derivatives (derivatives of functions with many variables)
  • Solving ordinary differential equations
  • Real-world applications using differential equations
  • Solving initial and boundary value problems

Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)

Subject Topics

  • Digital Logic: Basics of how computers use 1s and 0s, logic gates, binary arithmetic
  • C Programming: Writing and understanding code in C
  • Data Structures: Organizing data using arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues, trees, graphs, etc.
  • Basic Algorithms & Problem Solving: Solving problems using step-by-step methods like searching, sorting, recursion, etc.
  • Discrete Mathematics: Logic, sets, functions, graphs, and combinatorics the math used in computer science

 Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) 

Subject Topics

  • Digital Logic: Logic gates, number systems, and digital circuits
  • Circuit Theory and Networks: Understanding how electrical circuits work
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits: Learning about diodes, transistors, amplifiers, etc.
  • Signals and Systems: How signals behave and how systems respond to them (includes time and frequency domain analysis)

Can Polytechnic Diploma Holders Apply for the B.Tech Program from IIIT?

No, the B.Tech program at the IIIT Hyderabad does not have any opportunity for polytechnic diploma holders. Yet, you can still have some great opportunities! Most government-accredited universities have introduced B.Tech Lateral Entry programs that enable diploma graduates to proceed with their education without having to write an entrance examination.
