There is good news for a student holding a 4-year undergraduate degree who wants to pursue a Ph.D. program. Recently, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar announced a major change in academics. Now, students with four-year undergraduate degrees can go straight for their PhD by taking the National Eligibility Test (NET). Earlier it was mandatory to have a master's degree to take the UGC-NET exam.
According to the UGC Chairman, students with 4-year undergraduate degrees can now pursue a PhD in any subject they choose, regardless of what they studied for their bachelor's. They can do this by selecting subjects for the NET exam and taking the test in their chosen subject. This change will help them advance themselves and grow. People with PhDs in fields different from what they studied in college will have more skills. This will make them better candidates for jobs. Now, students can follow their interests in any subject for their PhD, no matter what they studied in college.
Moreover, it is a must to have 75 percent marks in your bachelor’s of four years, There is a relaxation of 5 percent marks given to the reserved categories. You have to fulfill this criterion only then you will be eligible to apply for the NET exams. Those who do not have 75 percent marks can pursue 1 year Post-Graduate program after which they can apply for the UGC- NET exam.
