The National Test Agency is known to manage the UGC-NET on behalf of the University Grants Commission. This exam is conducted to determine whether the students are eligible for JRF or Assistant Professor. It tests students' general awareness, ability to solve problems, and English comprehension.
Students who have applied for the UGC NET need to visit the allotted test centers where they have to take their examination. The mode of exam is taken as a computer-based test (CBT), where students need to answer the questions within 3 hours. Here, students need to be effective thinkers while answering the questions within 3 hours.
There are no negative markings on incorrect answers. However, 2 marks are given to each correct answer.
Students need not worry if they do not crack the UGC NET examination; they can consider other alternatives like an online DBA program. A doctorate by DBA programme holds the same value as a regular PhD. Students who couldn’t crack the UGC NET competitive examination can complete their higher education through an online DBA program.
Applicants, while preparing for the examination, need to consider a few pointers to understand the nature of the examination:

The UGC-NET examination consists of two sections. Paper 1 is considered an aptitude test and evaluates a broad range of skills. On the other hand, paper -2 is subject-based.

The previous year, the UGC NET exam (held in Jan 2025) was conducted in shifts. The exam consists of two sections: Paper 1 and Paper 2.

This reflects that the questions in paper 1 were mostly in the range of easy to moderate. However, in the sections Data Interpretation, logical reasoning, mathematics, and the higher education system, some might feel that a little bit of thinking is required before answering questions.
Students can solve the previous year's question papers to help them understand which topic is easy for them and which topic is difficult for them. Students then need to focus on such topics. Another way of preparing for UGC-NET is by giving mock tests. It helps students develop the ability to think faster and answer within a time limit, so that they do not miss their whole exam.
Paper 2 in the UGC NET examination is subject-based. Students need to study according to their understanding. As for paper 1, students need to focus on a few topics to get better marks:
UGC-NET is considered one of the toughest examinations. Each year, a lot of students appear for the exam, but only a few of them get a JRF or become an Assistant Professor. Applicants who couldn’t get any of those need not worry, as now they can complete their doctorate in the DBA program.
Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) is an online program that is equivalent to a full-time PhD. An online DBA is ideal for those who are working and want to continue their higher education and get a ‘Dr’ title. Students who want to get a doctorate but don’t want to appear for the UGC NET competitive exam can consider an online DBA. There are many online DBA programs by foreign universities.
Here are a few top universities that provide an online DBA program. Here is a reference for students’ consideration.

A score of 170 is generally a good mark, but it won’t help students get a JRF. If students want to get JRF or Assistant Professor, they need to score more, depending on the category they belong to.
A monthly stipend for students who clear JRF gets a stipend of INR 37,000 per month. Students who are in their 2 year of JRF and are eligible for SRF (Senior Research Fellow) can get INR 42,000 per month.
There are no limitations on attempts for UGC- NET. However, if students are appearing for JRF, there is an upper age limit that depends on the category to which they belong.
It depends on the individual’s career goals and the priority of what is better for them. JRF provides funding for academic research, and an assistant professor involves research and teaching.
No, JRF is not a permanent job. It is a fellowship allotted to students for academic and research purposes.
There is no age limit for students applying for a PhD. But there are certain age restrictions if students are applying for JRF.
