The Distance Education Bureau (DEB) is located in New Delhi, India. The bureau oversees the management of distance/open/online education in India. The establishment year of DEB was 2012, the bureau replaced the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) organization that was used for open learning and distance education since 1985. 

The University Grant Commission is currently regulating the distance education bureau. Additionally, maintaining a better quality of education, examination, and research in Indian universities is under the work regulation of UGC.

For the betterment of the Indian Distance Education Bureau (DEB) introduced a new procedure for admission to Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or Online (OL) programs. As per the UGC-DEB Public Notice dated 19th August 2024, it is necessary to create a DEB ID after creating the ABC ID, learners (except international students) who want to pursue their online/ open learning this also includes the validity of the DEB ID till one completes the course or program.
