3 Out of 50 Foreign Universities gets UGC Accreditation to set Campuses in India

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved 3 out of 50 overseas Universities to set up their campuses in India, as quoted by the Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday. In the Rajya Sabha Question Hour, Pradhan mentioned that they are planning to expand the foreign campuses in India, for this over 50 universities have applied.

 Government is set to give the students an education opportunity of the international standards without leaving India. It is estimated that approximately 14 to 15 Lakh Indians fly abroad for higher education. This causes a huge outflow of funds within the country. So, to solve this major issue, the government is aiming to approve over 50 Quality Foreign Universities. Pradhan said negotiations are being done with the state governments.

Currently the Universities are being examined on the criterias of the government and the approvals that will be issued to them. This step is necessary for the student’s benefits.

The Education Minister also emphasized that institutional autonomy would also be provided to these foreign institutions once they are set up here in India.

The government would also be making tougher punishment policies for the universities who breach the rules. There would be high academic standards set for these institutions, in adherence to the education sector.

The current move is taken by the Indian government to increase and improve the research opportunities and an increased access to the quality of higher education in India.
