UGC Notice

Medical students in Bihar will get relief for sure. The state government is currently planning to increase MBBS seats in all government medical colleges. According to sources, all government colleges in Bihar are likely to add 25+ MBBS seats. This change is definitely going to increase the chances of overall intake for NEET UG admissions.

Although, it is just a proposal, but, in case that gets approved, several medical institutes, currently taking 120 students, then will take 150 students, that is, again a rise in 30 MBBS seats. There are many renowned medical colleges who are likely to do that, like Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (Muzaffarpur), Anugrah Narayan Medical College (Gaya), Government Medical College Bettiah, Bhagalpur Medical College, and Bhagwan Mahavir Medical College, Pawapuri.

MBBS Seat Expansion Likely to Ease Competition for NEET UG Aspirants in Bihar

The Bihar Health Department has administered principals of all the government medical colleges to initiate this procedure of increasing 30 seats to ease competition for NEET UG Aspirants. However, this proposed increase is also going to make a huge difference, as it will give more opportunities to the NEET UG aspirants. This is going to help candidates in getting their preferable college and will also reduce seat shortage.

Medical colleges with higher existing intake capacities are also expected to see proportional increases. PMCH’s total MBBS intake may go up to around 230 seats, while Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, could reach approximately 180 seats. AIIMS Patna and Purnea Medical College are also likely to witness an increase in their sanctioned strength.

To support this expansion, the state health department has assured assistance in addressing infrastructure and faculty-related requirements. Medical colleges have been advised to ensure the availability of adequate teaching staff, laboratories, and technical personnel as per NMC guidelines to avoid any issues during inspections.

NMC Seat Expansion Approval Process and What Medical Colleges Must Do

Government medical colleges have been asked to submit detailed proposals through the National Medical Commission’s seat expansion portal. Approvals will be granted only after colleges meet NMC norms related to infrastructure, faculty availability, and academic facilities within the prescribed timeline.

State Support for Infrastructure and Faculty to Meet NMC Norms

To facilitate the planned seat increase, the Bihar Health Department has assured support in addressing gaps related to infrastructure and staffing. Colleges must ensure adequate teaching staff, laboratories, and technical personnel to avoid hurdles during NMC inspections.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

Since, the Bihar Government asked the government medical colleges to increase at least 30 seats for the NEET UG students. The main aim for this is to boost admission intake of most state-run institutes from 120 to 150 seats.

Several premier institutes are expected to benefit from this expansion, including:

PMCH (Patna): rise to 230 seats.
IGIMS (Patna): Intake may reach 180 seats.
DMCH (Darbhanga), SKMCH (Muzaffarpur), ANMC (Gaya), and GMC (Bettiah): Increase from 120 to 150 seats.
AIIMS Patna and Purnea Medical College are also slated for proportional seat hikes.

Yes, this rise in seats can make a slight decrease in closing rank (cutoff) for state quota admissions. But also, with adding 25+ seats, students will get an opportunity to get admission in these colleges, and can make competition a little less as well. So, less stress for students.

The primary benefits include:

Reduced Seat Shortage: More available seats in affordable government colleges.
Better College Choices: Higher chances for students to get their preferred local institutes.
Improved Infrastructure: Since the state health department is providing assistance to meet NMC norms, colleges will likely see upgrades in laboratories and teaching facilities.
