IGNOU Begins Certificate Course in Healthcare Waste Management, Click here to Apply through Samarth

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has started a Certificate program in Health Care Waste Management (CHCWM) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) of the South-East Asia Region. The programme is aimed at strengthening public health systems and environmental safety measures by building professional capacity for safe and effective handling of the biomedical waste.

IGNOU is all set to offer all the academic programmes in Odia after signing an MoU with the Odisha government. 

The Health Care Waste Management programme is introduced by IGNOU and designed to address the health and environmental hazards arising from the irresponsible disposal of the healthcare waste. It targets the professionals and apprentices working in the hospitals and primary health centres, waste management services, and the municipal sanitation departments.

The course curriculum and content are in alignment with the India’s Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 (having amendments in the year 2018 and 2019), and the WHO’s global guidelines of following the healthcare waste management.

The students enrolling in the course would be introduced to the different types of healthcare waste and their impact on the public and the environmental health. The programme is gives an in-depth analysis of the legal frameworks, infection control norms, and region-specific best practices with a focus on the practical implementations.

Course Structure

The minimum duration of the course is of six months, with a maximum completion time of two years. Learners can get themselves enrolled in either of the two admission cycles of January-June or July-December. The eligibility criteria of being enrolled in the course is successful completion of class 12 or an equivalent degree.

The CHCWM programme takes a blended learning approach. Students get Self-Instructional Materials (SIMs) and an opportunity to participate in the live web conferences, interact in the Q&A forums, access instructional videos, and use a dedicated online platform and support.

The curriculum provides a flexibility in choosing between a workshop or a project in addition to the theory-based chapters. Assessment is based on the submitted assignments and a semester/term-end exam.
