Why Your IGNOU Degree May Become Invalid: UGC Rules Raise Concerns Over Distance Courses

The new regulations have come out, and according to the sources, it is declared that students enrolling for enormous courses at Indra Gandhi National Open University might face some issues. It is happening because some of the courses offered in distance mode have been announced invalid.  

IGNOU Offering Courses Barred in Distance Mode

It has already been announced by the University Grant Commission (UGC) that some of the courses have been restricted, but eventually, it is seen that IGNOU has still been providing these certain courses, like MA Psychology, both in online and distance modes. According to the official guidelines, courses like Psychology require practical and clinical training, and can not be offered to students through distance learning.  

Students at Risk of Invalid Degrees

Over 15,000 students apply for distance learning at IGNOU, specialising in Psychology. Reports have suggested that a particular number of students applying for this course are facing issues due to their confused state. Students are at risk of this invalidity because they are submitting assignments, paying the fees, attending classes, and preparing for exams for absolutely nothing. 

What UGC Rules Say

The suggestions have already been made by UGC to IGNUO not to take new admissions from the 2025 academic year, especially in healthcare-related courses, such as: 

• Psychology
• Nutrition
• Microbiology
• Biotechnology

IGNOU’s Response

But, it did not end here, there have been some disclaimers that are included by IGNOU in their admission brochure, which states that:

• Students need to make an “informed decision” before pursuing any course 
• These qualifications are only recognised in regular mode

As per the officials from IGNOU, many students undertake this program out of academic interest, but to apply the knowledge in real life. Additionally, it has also been said by the university that the currently going on admissions will not be cancelled and the ongoing courses will continue for the students. 

Impact on Students’ Careers

The biggest concern is that students with such degrees may face issues in:

• Appearing for NET/JRF exams
• Pursuing higher education
• Applying for professional roles

This has left many students unsure whether to continue with their courses.
