The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, today introduced two new undergraduate Engineering courses for the upcoming academic year of 2025-26. The following course will be offered via the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering. The following departments have been at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary research since IIT Madras’ inception in 1959.
Students who qualified for the JEE (Advanced) can now select these two new courses in the upcoming JOSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) Counselling. These courses have a total strength of 40 candidates in each course. The programmes introduced are:-
The following programmes will also offer a criterion to upgrade to a five-year Dual Degree (BTech + MTech) via the Interdisciplinary Dual Degree (IDDD) pathway.
The Director of IIT Madras, Prof. V. Kamakoti, highly prioritised that these programmes are crafted in a way to meet the demands of 5.0 Industry, health technologies, advanced manufacturing, and to meet the gap between academia and industry. These degree courses are created in such a way that they equip the students with cross-functional skills in the emerging sectors of AI-integrated engineering, IoT-driven biomedical innovations.
IIT Madras has started this course to fulfill the needs of the fast-growing digital engineering field, where computational tools collaborate with the mechanical systems and AI. The course curriculum combines the subjects such as data science, machine learning, high-performance computing, fundamental courses in solid/fluid mechanics, circuits, embedded systems, and dynamics.
The graduates from this course would be taken in for roles in aerospace, smart infrastructure, digital twin design, sustainable computing, and robotics. With this unique blend of conventional engineering as well as modern computation, this course encourages innovation and application-driven problem solving and making it the best programme for those who are working in the next-gen design implementation and automation industries.
The iBME programme develops candidates for the medical technology sector by combining the biomedical sciences with electrical and instrumentation engineering. It carries the application-rich modules in the IoT, web-based healthcare technologies, and AI and aims at solving real-world clinical problems.
Students would be given specific training to develop ethically sound and clinically viable solutions, better for the rehabilitation tech, healthcare systems, and diagnostic innovations. The course is beneficially ideal for students willing to pursue entrepreneurship in medtech, creation of AI-improved diagnostics, biomedical R&D, global healthcare needs, and enhanced diagnostics and therapeutics.
