Some serious allegations are circulating on social media based on caste-based discrimination and harassment involving some students at SRCC. But these allegations are denied by the college, they have posted a video for clarification on X, claiming and stating that it was a supposed incident.
In the viral video, it was shown that a man, who claimed himself as a third-year Dalit student at SRCC college only, proposed to a general category female student and was rejected. So, after being rejected, he complained against that student under provisions of the SC/ST Act, who later had to pay ₹50,000 to get the case withdrawn.
Responding to the claims, SRCC stated that no such incident has been reported to the college. In an official statement, the institution said:
“No such alleged incident/act has been reported in the college, nor does the college have any knowledge of such alleged incident/act happening. The claims/allegations being made are entirely the responsibility of the claimant(s).”
The video was the centre of attention, raising questions and debates over UGC Equity Regulation 2026, which was solely aimed at caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions. So, this case, which, according to the college, is claimed and said to be false, creates an alarm in the minds of those who belong to the general category. With this regulation by UGC, some students were concerned about getting involved in fake and false cases, so it has been said to be “redrafted” by the Supreme Court.
So, till then, it is directed by the UGC to all universities and colleges to strengthen the grievance redressal mechanism to make sure right and real cases are registered, rather than false accusations.
The UGC Equity Regulations were framed following long-standing demands from student groups and activists, who have repeatedly raised concerns that caste-based discrimination on campuses often remains unaddressed.
The opposition to the regulations has led to legal challenges, and on Thursday, the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of the new UGC Equity Regulations.
