UGC Declares 54 Private Universities as Defaulters by 2025 – Is Your Institution on the List?

UGC has listed 54 private universities in the country as non-cooperators since they never provide the required information as specified in Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, and do not provide the necessary disclosures on their websites. This progress has put the issue of transparency and compliance in institutions of higher learning under the scrutiny of both students and parents.

Manish Joshi, the Secretary of UGC, clarified that such universities had been constantly asked to provide elaborate information with supporting documentation sworn by the registrar. They also had to place the necessary formats and appendices on their websites with easy links on the home page to the students and the population at large. In spite of several reminders given by emails and through online meetings, these institutions did not comply.

Transparency Requirements

The UGC guidelines on public self-disclosure specify that the higher education institutions need to have an effective website that is easy to navigate, which must include a search facility, which must prominently display information to the stakeholders on the home page, and will not require registration or a login.

What Happens Next?

UGC has provided the list of defaulters and also requested that corrective action be taken instantly, as further measures may be taken in case the institutions still neglect the guidelines. This is after the regulator has increased its scrutiny of the operations of the private universities, where 23 universities were also warned in July because of their failure to appoint ombudspersons.

Important Note for Students

The key point to note here is that when you are declared a defaulter, it implies that these universities did not adhere to disclosure laws, and this does not imply that they are fake Universities. These are well-established institutions that must be made transparent and in accordance with the UGC regulations. The students who are interested, however, have to ensure that the institution they have joined has passed the test of compliance before they are accepted.
