All the adornments covering the release of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEE) results. This came after the Supreme Court’s 28th July 2025 order. It was taken after the High Court’s earlier decision to halt the implementation of the revised list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), as notified by the State government. It was quoted by a senior higher education department official on Wednesday.
The state education minister, Bratya Basu, clarified that they are in the higher education department and have already anticipated this and are ready to take the appropriate actions instantly, soon after the apex court’s order.
The board chairperson, Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee soon. They stated that they have consulted the legal experts and every step was taken to ensure the appeared students’ interests and the results would be declared soon.
Before the Supreme Court directive came, Banerjee said that they were ready to publish the results by 5th July 2025. But, soon after this, the legal developments followed, and the matter was put back, and they were eagerly waiting for the government’s directive. The WBJEE exams were held on 27th April 2025.
On 28th July 2025, a bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justices NV Anjaria and K Vinod Chandran vacated the stay of the HC on the OBC policy and mentioned that the prima facie, the high court’s order looks to be false.
On 17th June, the Calcutta High Court ordered an interim stay on the notifications published by the state government in regard to the reservations of 140 subsections under the OBC-A and OBC-B categories made by it.
The Supreme Court Bench took note of the submissions of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who appeared for the state government. He exclaimed in surprise at how come the high court could pass such an order,a reservation is part of the executive function. The state has prepared a new list after the high court hearing in May 2024, which has put down the inclusion of 77 communities in the OBC list.
