Yogi Adityanath’s New Rule Shocks Students, ‘Vande Mataram’ Now Compulsory in Every UP School

In‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ a major announcement ahead of the 150 years of Vande Mataram, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath said that very soon the singing of the national song will be made compulsory in all schools and colleges in the state. He said the decision is aimed at inculcating the spirit of unity, patriotism, and cultural pride among the students by making them sing the national song regularly. The announcement was made during the ‘Ekta Yatra’ (Unity March) in Gorakhpur on November 10.

Marking 150 Years of ‘Vande Mataram’

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ year-long nationwide commemoration of 150 years of Vande Mataram, the song that fits the freedom struggle of India most perfectly, started three days ago and will continue till November 7.

Vande Mataram was a song written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and was first published in the Bengali literary magazine Bangadarshan on November 7, 1875, along with the release of his novel Anandamath. In the end, it became a powerful emblem of India's fight for ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌liberation.

Nationwide Celebrations Begin

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ anniversary celebration Vande Mataram which lasts a whole year was started on the 7th of November 2025, and will continue till the 7th of November 2026. At the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi, the recitation of Vande Mataram in its entirety was led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with the participation of thousands of people. A special stamp and coin were also released by the Prime Minister to mark the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌occasion.

What the UP Government Said

According‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, every student should be aware of the patriotic and cultural value of Vande Mataram. He brought out: "It is the song that comes first and last from the nation; a symbol of our shared national consciousness and ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌identity."Thereafter he informed that the Education Department would soon issue the official directions for implementation in government, aided, and private schools and colleges.

The Larger Message

The‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ U.P. administration is trying to instill through the daily singing of Vande Mataram in schools and colleges the qualities of civic pride and love for the common national heritage among the ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌students.The authorities are also of the opinion that this step is a part of a larger cultural awareness program that is in the pipeline for the coming ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌year.
