The Karnataka government has announced a significant policy change regarding higher education in the state. On Wednesday, it was decided that beginning in the academic year 2024-25, public universities and affiliated colleges will revert to the traditional three-year degree program, moving away from the four-year degree structure that was recommended under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

This decision comes amid ongoing discussions about the effectiveness and implications of the NEP, which aimed to introduce a more flexible and interdisciplinary approach to higher education in India. The four-year degree program was intended to provide students with an opportunity to explore various fields of study and enhance their academic experience. However, the Karnataka government has expressed concerns about the feasibility and accessibility of this new structure for many students.

The reintroduction of the three-year degree program is seen as a move to simplify the education system and make it more aligned with the traditional frameworks that have been in place for decades. This shift is expected to ease the transition for students and parents who are familiar with the three-year model, which has been the norm for many years.

Officials believe that the change will also help in addressing the issues of affordability and completion rates, which have been a challenge for students in the context of a four-year degree program. The government hopes that this decision will foster greater participation in higher education and better cater to the needs of the student population in Karnataka.

In short, the Karnataka government's decision to revert to a three-year degree program reflects its commitment to making higher education more accessible and effective for all students in the state.

2 Year Experience

Hello! This question is creating confusion in the minds of almost every student. From my personal experience, this 4-year BCOM started after 2023 and yes, the majority of the universities are now offering 4-year degrees.

Till 2023, the duration of the BCom degree was 3 years which is a total of six semesters. However, as per the UGC (University Grants Commission), the BCom degree is typically 4 years from now. This statement created confusion between learners as the duration of the BCom degree matters the most.

Learners who are getting admission in the updated session will have to pursue the degree in 4 years (8 semesters). Plus, do check the duration of the program at the university you are planning to opt for, and if you are getting confused about it, you can free of cost talk to the counselors of College Vidya, they will help you beneficially.

I hope your doubts regarding the duration of the program got cleared and if you still have some doubts regarding the same or in related educational fields, you can surely ask me here :)
