UGC Notice

Delhi University (DU) has approved a way for eligible students from the first four-year undergraduate batch to enrol in PhD programmes directly, skipping the master’s degree altogether.

What Has Exactly Changed

The University of Delhi has amended its academic ordinances to allow students completing the fourth year of their undergraduate degree to apply directly for doctoral (PhD) programmes without first earning a master's degree.

This move specifically benefits the university's first cohort of students to complete the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), introduced under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022, in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Who Is Eligible

To qualify for direct PhD admission under this new rule, students must meet the following criteria:

Category

Minimum CGPA Required

General category

7.5

SC/ST category

7.0

Students meeting these thresholds after completing all four years of their undergraduate programme can apply directly to DU's PhD programmes for the 2026-27 session, bypassing the traditional master's degree requirement.

Understanding DU's First FYUP Batch: The Numbers

DU launched the four-year undergraduate format in the 2022-23 academic session, with 75,948 students enrolling in the very first batch. Here's how that cohort has progressed since:

  • 40,005 students exited after three years (2025), opting for a standard bachelor's degree
  • 35,943 students continued into the fourth year
  • Of these, 12,111 students (about 34.27% of the fourth-year cohort) applied for DU's one-year postgraduate programmes in 2026-27

This data shows that while a majority of students still exit after three years, a meaningful share is choosing to complete the full four-year cycle, the group now eligible for this new direct-PhD pathway.

Why the Fourth Year Matters

According to DU, the fourth year of the FYUP is designed to be more than an extra year of coursework. It is structured to:

  • Introduce research and entrepreneurship components into undergraduate education
  • Bring Indian degree structures in line with global academic standards
  • Encourage students to undertake academic research projects, where they must identify a real-world problem and work toward a practical solution

This research-oriented fourth year is what makes students eligible to skip the master's degree and move straight into doctoral studies, since they've already demonstrated foundational research capability.
