Anna University offers a PhD in Management for full-time or part-time study. The minimum duration is a full-time minimum of three years and a max of six years, typically coursework with six semesters for a full-time student. The University expects to balance coursework, research, research progress reviews, thesis work, and publications.
Candidates should hold a master's degree in management (MBA) or a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Management/Administration from a recognised institution. Usually, a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying degree is required. Candidates who hold a UGC NET (including JRF), CSIR NET, or equivalent fellowship are exempt from the university entrance written test, though they must attend the interview.
The doctoral program is primarily research-based, while beginning with some coursework as determined by the candidate's doctoral committee. The coursework allows research scholars to develop a solid theoretical foundation in the theories of modern management, research methodologies, and quantitative and qualitative methods, and other more elaborate topics specific to the field of study. After completing the coursework, candidates will devote themselves to original research, which ultimately leads to the preparation and submission of their thesis. It is expected that scholars will publish research articles in peer-reviewed journals before their thesis submission, following university policy.
However, candidates can also apply for the online DBA (Doctor of Business Administration), which is equivalent to a PhD. This program is not available in India, but various top-ranked foreign universities offer the DBA. If you are thinking whether it will be valid or not. - PhD in Management has 4 coursework subjects and consists of 12 credits in the aggregate, comprehensive written and oral qualifying examinations, biannual progress reports, and a doctoral committee that will monitor major research milestones.
- All of the coursework required by the program must be completed within 2 years from the date of provisional registration; students are permitted two attempts to supersede every subject.
- The program incorporates all of the main domains of management, namely human resources/economics/ finance/marketing/operations, strategy, and organizational behaviour.
- Applicants are required to have a recognized postgraduate management or related degree with a minimum of 55% marks, 50% for reserved categories.
- Students are required to submit a doctoral thesis, and usually publish refereed research papers before the final viva if they are completing a PhD in management.
- All research will be supervised by a recognised supervisor, and all students must meet with the doctoral committee frequently.
- Extensions may be awarded under specific conditions of up to one year, with a further six months given as a grace period for the completion of the submission of the thesis.

Who Can Apply?
Before applying for a PhD in Management, students should also be aware of the eligibility criteria for it. Here are some points about the eligibility that is required for admission, which are mentioned for reference below:
- The student must complete a Master’s degree in Management (MBA) or a post-graduate diploma in Business Management/Administration from IIM or an MS in Management Sciences from a recognized university or institution.
- Must have at least 55% marks or a CGPA of 5.5 on a 10-point scale on the qualifying examination, and SC/ST/physically-abled applicants: 50% marks or a CGPA of 5.0.
- Eligible candidates must have obtained their degrees from a recognized university as per the Anna University-approved list.
- Eligible candidates who have valid GATE, NET, UGC-NET with JRF, CSIR-NET, or SLET scores are exempted from the written entrance test of the university, but are required to take part in the interview.
- Eligible candidates will have options for full-time or part-time modes of PhD registration.
- Before finalizing the application, consent from a supervisor recognized by Anna University, unless exempted, is required.
- The final selection is based on the performance in the written entrance test, if applicable, and interview, overall merit irrespective of exemption, and as per the reservation policies.

Anna University PhD in Management Examination Pattern
The examination pattern of Anna University is simple and the most commonly opted examination pattern by online universities. The examination pattern of the university comprised two major components namely: internal assessment and end-term examination.
The internal assessments are conducted by the university to evaluate the learning of an individual according to the latest curriculum and it carries 20-30% of the total weightage that also includes the assignment, which is given to every student at the beginning of every semester. The end-term examinations are conducted to evaluate an individual's overall theoretical understanding during a semester and these examinations carry 70-80% of weightage.
Note: The question paper consists of three patterns, called ABC pattern type among which:
- Part A = 10*2 - 20 marks
- Part B = 5*13 - 65 marks
- Part C = 1*15 - 15 marks
