- Gauhati University was founded on 26 January 1948, to fulfill the long-standing need of a tertiary institution of higher education in Assam.
- Prior to its establishment, Assamese students had to depend on Calcutta University, which only allowed a certain number of Assamese student slots.
- The need for an independent university has been there since 1917, and influential personalities such as Satyanath Bora supported it.
- This agitation soon took off in 1928, when the Assam Ekta Sabha and local press gave a boost to the agitation to have a university in Assam.
- During the year 1932, a conference conducted by Qutubuddin Ahmad proposed a project to increase the agitation of a university in Assam.
- A London University Ph.D. Moidul Islam Bora maintained that Assam had to have its own university to bring about regional culture and education.
- The government was initially opposed to the idea based on financial institutional constraints and a low number of local students, but the demand for a separate university still persisted.

Gauhati University EMI Details
The Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) of Gauhati University as of October 2025 provides a method by which students can pay their fees in installments that will be provided in some distance and online courses. It is necessary to mention, though, that the university does not have a formal EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) plan with any financial partner outside. Otherwise, students have the option of paying their total fees in installments throughout the program and usually once in each semester. Other programs may permit the fees to be broken into two annual installments or four semester installments. In case you want to pay in installments, remember to inquire about the exact payments that can be made to your course.
Gauhati University Admission Process
The following is a simple step-by-step procedure to apply for online programs at the Guwahati University. Ensure that you consider all the steps to pass through your admission process.
Step 1: Sign up and Create Your ID - To begin with, go to the online portal of the university and create your own ABC ID. You will need to proceed with the admission process.
Step 2: Generate Your DEB ID - Once you have your ABC ID, visit the link that is given by the university and create your DEB ID. In the next section of the application, this ID is required.
Step 3: Finalize Your Registration - After this, log in to the registration portal using your DEB ID. The name, contacts, and date of birth will automatically fill. Other information, such as government ID, selected program, and study center, will have to be filled in manually. Once all the details are filled in, make the payment, and the form will generate a payment challan.
Step 4: Pay Your Fees - Use the payment link to make payments of the necessary fees. There is no need to fill in your Roll Number on the payment page; just leave it empty.
Step 5: Acceptance of your application - Use your date of birth and application number to log in to your dashboard. You have to enter the payment challan code and accept the terms and conditions in order to confirm your registration.
Step 6: Upload Documents - Post the required documents on the portal along with your photo and signature. After it, hand in your form at the specified center of the study.
Step 7: Verification of Documents and Roll Number Generation - Your research center will authenticate your papers. After all this is completed, you will get a Roll Number that is a formal enrolment into the program.
Step 8: Gather Your Study Resources - It is time to get yourself a study center and grab all the study materials, and start your online learning adventure with your Roll Number.

Gauhati University Examination Pattern
The examination pattern of the online program at Gauhati University varies per course; however, in the case of the entrance examination, they are in OMR format and include 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQ), which require one to answer within two hours. Each correct answer will give 1 mark, and in case of one wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted (negative marking). In the case of ongoing programs, examinations are based on a semester. You must have a minimum of 30% to pass in written exams and 40% in practical exams. In case you do not pass any paper, you are allowed to retake; however, all exams must be passed within 6 years of admission. In addition, you have to successfully pass all the subjects you have before you get to the subsequent semester. The Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) of Gauhati University is not selective with placement partners of its online programs. As opposed to the normal on-campus programs, whereby specific placement cells exist, the IDOL students are generally offered more comprehensive career advice. This is accompanied by career counseling to assist in job searches and planning, job leads, and internship opportunities offered by the main placement cell of the university. The companies such as Infosys, Wipro, and TCS have recruited students through the on-campus programs of Gauhati University, but they might also consider online graduates.
