The duration of the program is 3 years, as for a bachelor's degree but students at IGNOU can complete their program in a maximum of 6 years (3 additional years are offered for flexibility of students). The main objective of the program is to offer in-depth knowledge of accounts and finance to students to strengthen the base of students in the commerce industry.

Students who are pursuing Chartered Accountancy First Stage offered By ICAI can also enroll under the BCom Major in Accountancy and Finance. The main objective of this facility is to allow students to pursue a dual degree. For students who qualify for the first stage of Chartered Accountancy, their credit score will be transferred to the BCom Major in Accountancy and Finance program.
