The eligibility criteria for a PhD program at IIM Kashipur are- 

Academic Educational Criteria

• The individuals must hold a master’s degree in any specialization with an aggregate of 60% marks. 
• A Five-year integrated degree in any discipline with at least 60% of marks, obtained after completion of higher secondary schooling or equivalent, can also apply for the program. 
• Professional degree holders like CA, CMA, CS, who are recognized by UGC/ AICTE/ AIU with at least 60% of marks, can also apply for the PhD program. 
• Individuals having a 4-year bachelor’s degree with at least 60% of marks or equivalent are also eligible for the program. 

Qualifying Test Criteria

• The eligible individuals must qualify for entrance examinations like JRF- UGC/CSIR. GATE, GRE, or the institute entrance examination is required to be eligible to take admission in the program. 

Interview and final selection

• Shortlisted applicants for the Personal Interview (PI) will be provided with three high-quality research papers in their chosen area. They must select one paper for discussion during the interview. The PI panel will evaluate the applicant’s academic competence, research inclination, and other relevant attributes. Applicants must demonstrate satisfactory performance across multiple parameters as defined by IIM Kashipur.
• The final selection will consider the candidate’s fit with the academic area applied for, and each Area will independently prepare its own offer list. Only those meeting the requirements of all preceding stages will be considered for final selection. Academic area–wise merit lists will be prepared based on PI performance, and provisional admission offers will be extended accordingly.

Reservation Criterion

• The IIM Kashipur provides reservations to individuals belonging to reserved categories such as SC/ST, OBC, EWS, or DAP categories. 

Working experience 

• The working experience is not mandatory; however, individuals with full-time salaried working experience can apply for the PhD program.

The PhD program consists of three stages- 

• Coursework
• Comprehensive exam and Viva Voce
• Thesis Work

Once enrolled, scholars will complete coursework spread across six terms over two academic years, forming a core component of the PhD learning experience. Designed by qualified and experienced faculty, the courses across all nine areas of study provide a solid grounding in management research, general research methods and theory, and discipline-specific knowledge

Furthermore, the course design incorporates advanced electives, introductory modules on research in related areas to foster interdisciplinary thinking, and workshops on academic writing or teaching skills. While there is a common curriculum framework, each area may provide coursework options that best support its specific academic context and requirements. A detailed credit distribution for this structure is outlined below.

Research Methodology course

The course structure enables students to select advanced methodology courses that align with their individual research interests. All course selections must be approved by the Area Faculty PhD Coordinator, and certain foundational courses will be designated as mandatory. Students must complete at least 8 credits in the Research Foundation and Methodology category—7 credits during the first two years, followed by a 1-credit teaching module after completing the foundational requirements

In addition to the mandatory courses listed above, scholars may choose from the additional methodology courses offered during the first and second years, based on their research interests. They must complete at least 3 credits from this list and are advised not to exceed 5 credits.

Qualifying CGPA

To remain in the program, students must achieve a minimum CGPA of 6.5 out of 10 by the end of their first year (Term III) and second year (Term VI). Those with a CGPA between 6.00 and 6.49 can advance to the next year if they receive approval from the relevant authority, but will need to retake any courses where they fell short of the 6.5 requirement. The PhD Office will offer assistance regarding which courses are eligible for repetition. If a scholar has a CGPA below 6.00 at either review stage, they will be removed from the program without an option for appeal.

Comprehensive Examination

The individuals have to take up a comprehensive examination in their respective areas of specialization after completing the coursework in the first two years.

Thesis Submission

After successfully passing the comprehensive examination, scholars will begin work on their FPM dissertation under the guidance of the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC). Upon completion, the dissertation will be reviewed by a panel of internal and external experts, followed by a public defense before the panel of examiners. 

Award of Title 

After completing all the requirements for the program, the scholars will be awarded the title of ‘Doctor of Philosophy’. 

The examination pattern typically comprises online tests, proctored exams, study material, assessment and grading, pass criteria, and retake rules. The tests are given online using a digital platform and include a variety of questions. To preserve integrity, proctoring may be used. Participants are given study materials, and tests are graded by IIM Kashipur staff or designated evaluators. There may be a minimum pass condition, as well as retake policies.
