Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati), came into existence in 1994 and became the 6th member of the IIT fraternity. And later, the study programs commenced in the year 1995. Today, the Institute has 5 interdisciplinary academic centers that include engineering, science & humanities subject fields and 11 departments. Students can pursue BTech, MA, BDes, MTech, MSc, and certain PhD study programs.

In a short period, IIT Guwahati managed to build a world-class infrastructure that is equipped with high-tech labs, that are ready to carry out advanced research.  The Campus is spread over an area of 285 hectares near the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river and it is 20 km away from the City center. The Campus has picturesque views with the river on one side and hills on the other side. 

IIT Guwahati is one of its kind as it is ranked among the top 100 world universities within 50 years of age. IIT Guwahati is ranked 32 globally in the category of Research Citations per Faculty and positioned 364th in QS World University Rankings 2024. It is ranked 7th among the top engineering institutions in India by the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework), of the Union Minister. It is also ranked 2nd by the Government of India (Swachhata Ranking). Other Ranking of the University includes 6th in SDG 7 Affordable & Clean Energy (Sustainable Development Goal 7).
