The KSOU PhD programme is structured according to the guidelines provided by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in order to ensure equal footing with a traditional university deal before the public. The PhD programme has a minimum duration of three years and will require coursework. The candidate is expected to have completed the research work and thesis within six years. Extensions in time will require justification and formal approval.

Admission eligibility is determined by KSOU and UGC guidelines. Applicants are required to have earned a Master's degree in Chemistry with the requisite qualifying percentage and to take and pass the KSOU Common Entrance Test (CET). Once selected, students complete courses in research methodology and advanced topics in chemistry and are required to submit a research proposal. The research proposal is developed with a research supervisor and then is to be presented as a final, to an appeal to a Research Advisory Committee, who will decide on it before student registration can take place.  

KSOU’s Chemistry Department offers students access to top-tier laboratory facilities, a seminar library dedicated space, and modern smart classrooms for face-to-face or online reading. The faculty have expertise in a range of chemical science specializations and are active researchers publishing in established journals and/or developing collaborative research. The department organizes workshops, symposia, and conferences to facilitate the opportunity for scholarly interaction. 

Graduates of the KSOU PhD program in Chemistry go on to work in academia and research institutions, as well as private sector industry roles in general in chemical and pharmaceutical companies, and government laboratories. The educational experience at KSOU is recognized for developing a quality experience and for offering an affordable one, while also having an appreciation for contributing to the improvement of knowledge of scientific research in India.
