In 1997, the Mahatma Gandhi International Hindi University (MGIHU), having been started pursuant to the directions of the Act No. 3 of parliament, was set up with the aim and goal of promoting and developing the international Hindi language as a language of knowledge, science, and culture. The university is located in Wardha, the birthplace of the constructive activities of Mahatma Gandhi, which combines the Gandhian values with modern academic excellence. It will strive to make Hindi not only a literary language but also a world language of communication, research and education. MGIHU emphasizes inclusiveness, peace, non-violence, and interdisciplinary knowledge and has programs in eight faculties, among them the Language, Literature, Translation, social sciences, management, law, education, and culture.
The university also has an effective distance education program with a current Learning Management System (LMS) in support of flexible and interactive online education. It has a unique site, HindiSamay.com, which allows free access to a collection of more than one lakh pages of Hindi literature, including the works of Bharatendu Harishchandra to the works of modern authors, as well as translations into Hindi of world literature. MGIHU works to develop Hindi as a universal scholarly language by working with international universities through research and study abroad programs. Foreign languages such as French, Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese are also imparted using Hindi, and this mission statement is also underpinning its Global Hindi. Having a serene academic background and focus on intellectual and moral growth, MGIHU is not merely a university; it is a trend of making Hindi a world language that is based on Gandhian thought and modern innovation.
