About UPES B.Tech Lateral Entry
UPES (University of Petroleum & Energy Studies) is known for high-standard learning and strong placement for higher education, especially in the engineering domain. The university has introduced a Lateral Entry Program for its B.Tech courses. This program is meant for diploma holders who wish to skip the first year and join directly in semester 3 (the second year). This is a golden opportunity from a prominent university like UPES for diploma holders to earn a graduation degree.
The idea is to use vacant seats or dropouts from the first year B.Tech to allow diploma students to advance to full B.Tech degree. Students admitted under lateral entry will finish B.Tech in 3 years. The lateral entry policy provides a chance for many technical diploma graduates to get a full engineering degree without repeating an entire four-year course. UPES treats lateral entry students on par with regular B.Tech students in terms of results and degree awards.
Though there are no specific seats allotted for diploma holders applicants. Generally, the seats depend on the dropout, and the seats remain vacant. However, those who have completed their 3-year diploma in engineering and earned 60% of aggregate marks, especially in science and maths, from a recognized university/ institute can enroll for the B.Tech Lateral Entry at UPES.
When it comes to specializations, there are four branches under which core specializations are offered. These four branches are Energy, Mechanical, Electrical, and Sustainability.
The core specializations offered under the branch are:
- Energy: Applied Petroleum Engineering and Chemical Engineering
- Mechanical: Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical: Electronics and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and VLSI Design and Technology
- Sustainability: Fire and Safety Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Sustainability Engineering
After enrolling for the program, students need to attend the classes regularly. They are also provided with placement support to the learners so they can apply for better opportunities.

The quality of education offered in online programs is of the same standard as offered in an on-campus program. Be it curriculum, faculty members, evaluation methods, practical sessions, online & on-campus programs follow similar standards of quality.

- The specializations offered by the university are APE with Gas Spl., Chemical, Mechanical, Petroleum, Civil, Computer Science, and Electrical / Power Systems.
- If someone holds a diploma in Agricultural Engineering, they cannot apply for lateral entry in any B.Tech branch.
- The number of lateral seats is limited. They come only from vacant or dropout seats in the first year.
- The lateral seats cannot exceed 10% of the approved program strength.
- Once admitted, a branch change is not allowed for lateral entry students.

Who Can Apply?
These are the eligibility rules for applying to UPES B.Tech Lateral Entry:
- The applicant must have completed a 3-year diploma in engineering from a recognized State Board of Technical Education & Training. It should be in a discipline compatible with the chosen B.Tech branch.
- The diploma should include Mathematics and Science. The candidate must have scored at least 60% aggregate marks in Science & Mathematics in the diploma exam.
- No work experience is required to enroll for the program.

UPES, Uttrakhand EMI Details
UPES doesn’t offer EMI feasibility to students. But for the relief of learners, the university has collaborated with banks and financial institutions, which ease the financial burden of learners. They can divide their fees into installments. The EMI scheme has low interest rates and no hidden charges. These options make education more affordable and manageable. Even those enrolling in online or hybrid courses can avail these EMI plans during admissions.
UPES B.Tech Lateral Entry Admission Process
Before initiating the admission process, students are suggested to check eligibility. To proceed, it is mandatory to fulfill the eligibility criteria. Below are the steps to complete the admission process:
Step 1 : Visit the UPES admissions page and choose your course.
Step 2 : Fill in personal, academic, and contact details. Upload required documents and photos.
Step 3 : Learners are required entrance exam score, depending on the program, and/or, available for a personal interview.
Step 4 : Based on the score, seat is allotted to applicants.
Step 5 : Submit all original documents for verification (mark sheets, ID proofs, etc.).
Step 6 : After verification, pay the program fees and complete enrollment.

UPES B.Tech Lateral Entry Examination Pattern
UPES follows a structured semester exam system. Exams include theory tests, lab practicals, assignments, and quizzes. For online programs, exams are proctored and monitored.
