The IIM entrance exam, also known as the Common Admission Test (CAT), is a nationally-conducted, highly competitive management entrance examination held annually in India. Its primary purpose is to identify and select individuals of exceptional merit for admission into the postgraduate management programs offered by the IIMs, along with several other esteemed business schools across the country.

The eligibility criteria for the Common Admission Test (CAT) may vary slightly from year to year, but here are the general eligibility requirements:

Educational Qualifications

For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category candidates, the minimum marks required are usually 45%. It's important to note that these percentages can vary from year to year, so you should check the official CAT website for the most current eligibility criteria.
  • Final Year Students: If you are in the final year of your Bachelor's degree program, you are also eligible to take the CAT exam. However, if you are selected for admission to an IIM or other participating business schools, you must submit proof of having fulfilled the eligibility criteria mentioned above before joining the program.
  • Age Limit: There is no specific age limit for taking the CAT exam. Candidates of all ages are eligible to apply.
  • Reservation Criteria: As per government regulations, seats are reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories. The specific reservation percentages may vary by institution and year, so it's essential to check the latest information provided by the respective IIMs.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

For admission to any IIM, you need to clear the Common Admission Test (CAT), which is a national-level entrance examination for admission to MBA programs across various top B-schools in India.

CAT is considered as one of the most difficult entrance exams in India. However, with a good understanding of the syllabus and exam pattern, and regular practice, you can score a good percentile. This is because the exam is less about academics and more about time management, handling pressure, and decision making, so apart from knowledge, regular practice is very important to ace the IIM entrance exam CAT.

For regular on-campus MBA/PGP courses at IIMs, it is compulsory to clear the CAT cutoff. However, you can get admission to an IIM online MBA program without the CAT exam but only if you fulfil the required eligibility criteria.

To be eligible for the CAT exam, a candidate must possess a Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC/ST/PwD candidates). Final year students are also eligible to apply.

Both CAT and UPSC exams are challenging and comparing the two exams is even more challenging because they serve entirely different purposes and assess distinct skill sets. The difficulty of each exam depends on the individual's strengths, background, and level of preparation. It's not accurate to directly compare the difficulty of CAT and UPSC, as they are designed for different career paths.

The registration fees for the IIM entrance exam CAT is Rs. 2400 for General category candidates, and Rs. 1200 for those belonging to the SC/ST category.

The CAT examination is conducted on the last Sunday of the month of November. So, this year in 2023, the exam is scheduled to be conducted on 26th November. The exam will be conducted in three different slots- Morning Slot, Afternoon Slot, and Evening Slot. The timings for all the three slots remains same at each and every test centre across the country.

The last date for IIM entrance exam CAT registration is 13th September. The applicants must register before 5 pm sharp because the registration window will close thereafter and without registration you will not be able to give the CAT exam.
