The Master of Philosophy, MPhil, was a very popular two-year postgraduate course available in many areas, such as Humanities, Commerce, Law, and Sciences. This was for students who had already passed their master's degree and wanted further specialization in their research in a given field. Some of the most popular MPhil courses included specializations like MPhil Psychology, MPhil English, MPhil History, MPhil Economics, and MPhil in Management.
The MPhil is more or less focused on research rather than a regular master's course. Students could explore their interests in a much wider and more detailed way.
The admission processes in every college vary. Even though some colleges contrived an entrance exam, others rely to a large extent on the PUBDET to select their preferred candidates. Admission requirements included a postgraduate degree with at least 50% marks. The eligibility criterion, however, may vary from institution to institution.
However, the National Education Policy 2020 has banned MPhil programs from Indian institutions and universities. The government has decided to withdraw this course and not enroll any more students in the course. This is likely to push the students directly into a PhD after completing the master's, with no interim period involving the MPhil. Even though it is no longer there, MPhil has been an excellent academic course that enabled those who wanted to pursue research and academic career lines to get ahead.
MPhil fees differed from one institution or university to another between INR 1100 and lakh. It included the names of Amity University, Calcutta University, and Jamia Millia Islamia.
For most, an MPhil was more of a stepping stone towards a PhD. Others also did it to enhance job prospects. With MPhil, graduates were eligible for careers in academia as researchers, lecturers, professors, economists, psychologists, and so on. In general, the average salary that could be earned by an MPhil graduate would range from INR 7 to 9 lakh annually, depending upon the domain and sector they got into.
Today, Indian young research minds are actually motivated directly to pursue a PhD and are considered as the greatest prize for getting the highest quality in academic and research training.
Admission requirements for MPhil programs vary in different colleges. However, the general pattern suggests that most students who complete their MPhil tend to pursue a PhD. If you are interested in pursuing an MPhil, then you will have to meet certain eligibility criteria. Most of these eligibility criteria are similar for various institutions.
Note: The requirements will vary a bit from college to college or university to university. So, have a look at the policies of the institutes where you will apply.
While for many students MPhil provided an opportunity to acquire intensive knowledge on a subject in preparation for a PhD, the National Education Policy 2020 has done away with MPhil altogether in India. Hence, students who have completed a Master's program have gone straight to pursuing a PhD or other higher research programs and thus have little or no course dependency on MPhil programs.
MPhil programs allow the students to delve deeper into their subject using research and advanced coursework. Those who would have completed the course often moved into academic research, as professors or professionals in some specialized field like economics or psychology.
Though that route is no longer available in India, all interested in research-based careers are open to other routes while pursuing doctoral qualifications or equivalent qualifications to augment their expertise.
To apply for an MPhil or PhD program, candidates must meet certain qualifications and follow the admission process. Below are the key points about eligibility and the process.
Some candidates can skip the entrance test and directly appear for the interview. These include:
Even those exempt from the test must still register online to be eligible for the interview.
For candidates who take the entrance test, the final selection is based on:
For candidates exempt from the entrance test, the interview will carry 100% weightage.
A candidate should have a Master's degree in the relevant subject with at least 55% marks from an acknowledged university for eligibility to be admitted to an M. Phil. Candidates of the SC/ST category, however, benefit from relaxation. They are eligible to get admitted to M. Phil if they have at least 50% marks.
Apart from these academic requirements, the student should also ensure the university issuing his degree is recognized. It could help validate the degree issued and be recognized within universities offering M. Phil. The primary focus of this program is to improve the candidate's research capabilities in a particular field, and some universities may conduct entrance tests or even interviews to check if the candidate has the research capability.
Other universities can also have additional eligibility requirements like for instance, specific background-related subjects or relevant experience in work. Therefore, it is important to check the respective requirements of each university before applying to the M. Phil course.
If options beyond the MPhil program are considered, the best option is opting for a PhD. A PhD, known as a Doctor of Philosophy, gives you the possibility of deepening your knowledge of the subject of your interest and producing actual research that could change matters within the same field.
Whereas an MPhil is focused on a single-focus question or problem or circumscribed scope of inquiry, a PhD is generally more comprehensive and ought to contribute some breadth of knowledge with your subject's advanced understanding. You will find other very experienced mentors and scholars who shall guide you through valuable insights and assistance as you explore your research path.
Often, PhD programs lead to further professional opportunities in careers, mainly in academia and research. You develop extensive critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that apply to other industries apart from the specific area of expertise.
In short, if you are ready to take your academic journey further and become a serious contributor towards knowledge, consider a PhD program. Such a rewarding pathway opens up doors and new prospects while doing greater favor to professional qualifications.

The MPhil program was a great opportunity for those seeking to specialize further after their master’s degree, focusing on deep research in subjects like Psychology, English, Economics, and Management. It prepared students for academic and research-based careers. However, with the introduction of the National Education Policy 2020, MPhil programs have been discontinued in India, leaving PhD programs as the primary path for students interested in research. While an MPhil allows for focused research, a PhD offers even more comprehensive training and advanced opportunities. Today, students who want to pursue research-based careers can go directly into PhD programs after completing their master's, which provides broader and deeper expertise in their chosen field. In short, though the MPhil is no longer an option, PhD programs have become the key route for academic and professional advancement in research and specialized fields.
To get into an MPhil program, students needed to have completed a BBA, B.Com (4 years), MBA, or an equivalent degree. They had to score at least 65% in a semester or 50% in an annual system, with no third division (lowest passing grade) in their academic record.
However, MPhil programs have been discontinued in India under the National Education Policy 2020, so these admissions requirements no longer apply in Indian institutions.
MPhil used to be a 2-year postgraduate course available in many specializations, like Psychology, Economics, and Management. It was for students who had already completed a Master’s degree and wanted to go deeper into research. MPhil programs offered more detailed study compared to a Master’s degree but have been removed from Indian academic programs now.
To pursue an MPhil, students needed to have an honours degree with a first or upper-second class grade, or a UK Master’s degree (or an equivalent qualification). Universities also looked at other factors, like published work or academic potential. However, since the MPhil is no longer available in India, students now directly pursue PhDs after completing their Master's degree.
Yes, an MPhil could be earned in almost any subject, such as Philosophy, Linguistics, Political Science, or Economics. It allowed students to explore their field in more depth. But again, since MPhil programs have been phased out in India, students now move directly from a Master’s degree to a PhD program if they want to continue their studies.
Students needed a Master’s degree to apply for an MPhil. However, some institutions might have accepted exceptional students straight from a Bachelor’s degree. However since MPhil programs have been discontinued in India, students now focus on completing their Master's and then applying for a PhD. In India, the MPhil path has been replaced, and students looking to do research and advanced study go directly from a Master’s to a PhD.
