Established in 1956 by the Indian Parliament, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences is located in New Delhi. In 1960, the Department of Dental Surgery was set up under AIIMS. It was only around the 2000s that the department introduced well-developed postgraduat and PhD programs in dentistry and related fields. The Center conducted training programs for dental surgeons, health workers, nurses, school teachers, and NGOs on the prevention of oral diseases and effective tobacco cessation counselling.

The Maulana Azad Medical College was inaugurated in February 1961 by Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
