UGC Notice

UGC has finally given the green light for eligible universities to offer one year postgraduate programmes through Online and Distance Learning mode and this is a really big update for all the students who have completed a four year bachelor's degree with Honours. The revised guidelines were issued by UGC on July 28 replacing an earlier notification that was released on July 24. But one important thing to know here is that not all universities can start these programmes immediately. Only those universities that are already recognised to offer the two year PG programme in online or distance mode can introduce the corresponding one year course in the same subject.

 Did you know?

A one-year postgraduate degree can help eligible students save an entire academic year compared to a traditional two-year master's programme. That's why 22% of students consult College Vidya advisors before choosing the right online or distance university.

Before launching the programme universities will also have to get approval from their academic bodies including the Board of Studies, Academic Council and Executive Council. So it is not something that will happen overnight. The new one year PG programme will only be available to students who have completed a four year undergraduate degree with Honours as recommended under NEP 2020. Students applying for professional courses like MBA, MCA and PGDM will continue to follow the admission rules set by their respective regulatory authorities so that remains unchanged.

UGC has also made it very clear that universities must maintain the same academic standards while offering these programmes. The curriculum, credit requirements, study material, teaching process and assessment pattern all have to follow the UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes and the UGC ODL and Online Programmes Regulations 2020.

So basically this is a great step towards giving students more flexibility to continue their higher education without compromising on quality. But universities have been asked to make sure all academic and regulatory requirements are met before admissions begin. This move is expected to open up a lot more flexible learning opportunities for students across India while keeping academic standards the same everywhere.
