UGC Cracks Down on EdTech-University Tie-Ups: 32 Fake Universities Identified, Students Put on High Alert

UGC has issued a very strong warning against unauthorised EdTech and University collaborations. It is basically a warning to all students not to fall into the trap set by EdTech companies that are offering courses using university names, but these tie-ups are not allowed. 

UGC Warning: EdTech Degrees May Be Invalid

In its latest advisory, UGC revealed that several EdTech platforms are promoting online and distance learning (ODL) courses using the names of recognised universities through:

• Newspaper advertisements
• TV promotions
• Social media campaigns

So, to mainly summarise the exact point raised by UGC is that any course which is offered through a third-party franchise DOES NOT carry any UGC recognition and students might end up receiving invalid degrees. 

Strict Action Against EdTech Companies and Universities

UGC has warned that it will take strict legal action against:

• EdTech companies violating norms
• Universities engaging in unauthorised partnerships

The move comes as concerns grow over misleading marketing practices in the online education space.

32 Fake Universities Under UGC Scanner

Alongside this crackdown, UGC has also highlighted that 32 institutions across India have been identified as fake universities as per its February 2026 list.

These institutions:

• Do not have the authority to award degrees
• Are added to the list after complaints and investigations
• Continue to be monitored by UGC

How UGC Is Tackling the Issue

To stop this malpractice, UGC is actively:

• Monitoring institutions through its Anti-Mal-Practice Cell (AMPC)
• Issuing show-cause and warning notices
• Updating the fake universities list regularly
• Advising state governments to take legal action, including FIRs
