West Bengal Mandates NET Scores for PhD Admissions, Scraps University-Level Entrance Tests

So, in a major overhaul of the doctoral admission process, the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal, has directed all state universities, private universities, and aided institutions to adopt national-level eligibility test scores for PhD admissions. Furthermore, the move aligns with the UGC Regulations, 2022, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and a UGC communication dated March 28, 2024.

Key Highlights of the Directive

Accepted National-Level Exams

Universities have been instructed to consider scores from:

• UGC-NET
• UGC-CSIR NET
• GATE
• CEED
• Other recognised national-level tests

End of Multiple Entrance Tests

• Universities will no longer conduct separate exams such as:
  • PhD Admission Test (PAT)
  • Research Entrance Test (RET)
  • Research Eligibility Test

Institutions have also been directed not to advertise such entrance exams for the upcoming academic session

New Admission Process

The revised PhD admission process will include:

1. Shortlisting based on national-level exam scores
2. Interview round conducted by universities
3. Final selection based on merit and performance in the interview
