The examination pattern at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore varies from program to program and department to department. Generally, coursework exams are conducted at the end of every semester. These coursework exams could be either mid-term exams final exams, or both. Apart from this, students are also required to timely submit their assignments and projects which constitute an integral part of the evaluation process. For PhD students,  a comprehensive exam is usually conducted after the completion of coursework. Additionally, Students are often required to present seminars and participate in discussions. PhD candidates are required to prepare a thesis/Dissertation, emphasizing the research work and the outcome at the end of their coursework. A grand viva is also conducted for PhD candidates where they have to defend their research findings before the Departmental Research Committee(DRC).
