The University of Calicut is one of the most prestigious public universities in Kerala. It was established in 1968, following its separation from the University of Kerala. Since then, it has served as a significant higher education institution in South India. The University is located on a sprawling campus and has over 400 affiliated colleges. The University also offers many programs, such as undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate, and Ph.D. programs in a variety of disciplines (most notably, in the areas of arts and social science). The University is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has received accreditation as an A+by NAAC. The University of Calicut, located in Malappuram, Kerala, has a wide variety of courses, ranging from 10 key study areas, such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Education, Law, and Management, that offer UG, PG, PhD, diploma, and certification courses to students in Kerala and across the country.

The university secured the 89th position amongst all Indian universities and the 43rd position among state public universities in the NIRF Rankings 2024. According to the QS Asia University Rankings 2025 (Southern Asia), the university ranked within the #179 bracket. Furthermore, on a global level, it was listed at 601−620 in the QS Asia Rankings 2024.

The University received an A+ from the NAAC in 2022 in Cycle 4 with a 3.45 CGPA (4) from a previous A grade at 3.13 from NAAC Cycle 3 in 2016. The UGC recognizes the University with grade-based autonomy and submits & updates AISHE data regularly.

The programmes offered by the University of Calicut include flagship programmes of B.Tech, B.Sc., MBA, MA, M.Sc., M.Com., MCA, LLB, LLM, M.Ed., B.Ed., and Ph.D. programs are offered through its School of Distance Education, and it is working towards introducing a School of Professional Studies. University of Calicut Admission Process Steps

In most cases, the University of Calicut's admission process is conducted online through the University's admission portal. The candidates are required to follow a series of processes to apply for the courses of their choice. 

  • Visit the official site of the University of Calicut & click on admission.
  • Create a registration with a valid email ID and mobile number. The process would generate an application number.
  • Fill in personal and academic details in the application form.
  • Scan a few documents immediately, such as your photograph, signature, academic honorary certificates, and then upload.
  • Select from the available list for course and college preferences.
  • Pay the admission fee through an online payment method like net banking, UPI, or debit/credit card.
  • After the application closing date, the university will publish a rank list or merit list from the qualifying marks from the applications. 
  • After announcements are made, selected students are contacted for counselling or direct admission according to the specified courses. 

Note: For some programs like the MBA or MCA, it is possible that entrance tests such as CAT/CMAT/KMAT, etc., are required, and then an interview or group discussions would formally follow.

University of Calicut EMI Details

The University of Calicut is working with financial partners and NBFCs to offer education loans and EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) facilities to make higher education accessible. EMIs help students make partial monthly payments towards their tuition fees. Some of the University’s affiliated colleges also provide no-cost EMIs or low EMI schemes with third-party lenders. These EMIs and Plans will cover tuition fees, and even books, hostel, or lab charges. This is definitely a good option for students belonging to low or middle-income families. The financial aid office at the University can guide various EMI schemes when you arrive for admission.

University of Calicut Examination Pattern

The University of Calicut has an examination system based on the semester pattern. In this system, an academic year is divided into two semesters, and the students undergo continuous internal assessments and end-of-semester examinations. In Internal Assessment, the Continuous Internal Assessments will include assignments, quizzes, seminar presentations, project works, and attendance. The Continuous Internal Assessment weightage will normally be around 20 to 30 percent, and the end semester examination will have a weightage of 70% or above, depending on the type of the course. 

The examination will be conducted according to the timetable published on the University portal by the Controller of Examinations. For UG and PG courses, theory papers will typically include practical examinations, and the final results of the exams are published in a few weeks after the conduct of exams are conducted. Students are assigned grades, and for the UG and PG courses, students are graded based on the Credit Semester System (CSS), which includes letter grades and Grade Point Average (GPA).

  • Class-10th and class-12th marksheets and certificates
  • Transfer Certificate (TC) from the previous institution attended
