What Is DU's Direct PhD Admission 2026 Pathway?

On August 21, 2026, the University of Delhi released an official notification about a path available for students to pursue a PhD without having to earn their Master's degrees first after completing four years of undergraduate education.

This is because the FYUP batch of DU, who had taken admission through the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022 in accordance with NEP 2020 for their undergraduate degree in 2022-23, completed four years of study in 2026. The amendment of Ordinance VI, with the approval of the DU Academic Council and Executive Council, now enables eligible candidates to pursue their PhD.

In short, this means that a DU undergraduate can now pursue a PhD after four years without having to take the master's degree, provided they meet the benchmark set by the university.

Why Did Delhi University Introduce This Policy?

According to the FYUP model of NEP 2020, it has been ensured that good academically performing students can always move to the research pathway easily. The fourth-year students in the FYUP have to solve the problem through research and skill-based courses, internships, and community service; therefore, it is named the year of research readiness.

As the first batch of FYUP will graduate in 2026, DU found out that most of these students had formed the research base as per their Master’s degree itself. Hence, instead of letting these students go through the two-year PG program to pursue a PhD program, DU has framed the academic pathway for them and termed it as per the requirements of NEP 2020.

DU Direct PhD Admission 2026: Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the direct PhD pathway, a candidate must meet all of the following:

• Must have completed the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) at Delhi University in 2026 (the university's first FYUP graduating batch).
• Minimum CGPA of 7.5 across the four-year degree for General/OBC/EWS category students.
• Minimum CGPA of 7.0 for SC/ST category candidates.
• Must satisfy any additional department-specific or subject-specific requirements as notified by the respective Department Research Committee (DRC).

Important: This pathway does not apply to students who completed a regular three-year undergraduate degree, nor to students from other universities, even if they hold a four-year degree. • Prepare a research proposal or statement of purpose, as most PhD admission processes — even direct-entry ones — expect some articulation of your intended research area.

Is This a Permanent Policy Change?

No, not necessarily. As per all the official communications on this issue, it is referred to as a ‘special arrangement’ meant specifically for the academic year 2026-27 and only for that cohort of FYUP students who would be doing their four-year bachelor’s program. Whether the university decides to make this a regular practice or not would be up to the decisions made by the Academic Council in future.

What if you do not meet the eligibility criteria for a PhD after the Four-year undergraduate program?

If you fail to satisfy the eligibility conditions for a PhD after FYUP, then there is no provision to apply for PhD admission through this path. You may enroll yourself for a master's course in the respective discipline and apply for PhD admission after obtaining the required percentage in it, generally 55% or above, with some relaxations where applicable. There are other alternatives like improving your academic performance, changing universities if they have different eligibility conditions, etc. The normal PhD admissions regulations of DU accept the option of doing a one-year master’s after a four-year bachelor’s course and vice versa. 

A few other options worth considering if you don't meet the direct-pathway cutoff:

• Apply to a different university with different eligibility norms for four-year degree holders
• Focus on improving your academic standing during the master's if your FYUP CGPA fell just short
• Note that DU's regular PhD framework already permits the standard four-year bachelor's-plus-one-year master's route, so this isn't a dead end—just the non-exception path
• Individuals may also opt for the Online Doctorate of Business to earn their ‘Dr.’ title.
