Kannur University is one of the renowned state government universities in the state of Kerala, which was brought into existence in the year 1996 under the Kerala Legislative Assembly Act number 22. Initially, this was set to be established as the Malabar University in an ordinance signed by the Governor of Kerala on November 9, 1995, but however adopted the name Kannur University due to reasons of being adapted to the local context and the local culture. The university is a reminder of how seriously Kerala takes the need for higher education and has proved to be the mainstay of scholastic expansion in North Kerala.
As it is located in the historically rich Malabar region, Kannur University has grown in stature since its inception to become a full-fledged university that addresses the educational requirements of the northern regions of Kerala state. Kannur University does not offer formal EMI facilities since the courses are designed in such a way that they can be affordable and able to be pursued by students of all economic backgrounds. But the university lets the students pay fees on an instalment basis according to the academic calendar.
