The University of Madras was founded in 1857 and is one of India's most prestigious public state universities, and the first university in the state of Tamil Nadu, based in Chennai. It is commonly considered the mother institution of some of the older universities in South India, and has been influential in the formation of higher education within the region. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs with a large network of affiliated institutions throughout its jurisdiction. They are not only institutions that provide quality teaching but also play a major role in research in many fields like Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Management, and Technology. An important feature of the academic climate in the university is the versatility in research, where there are a lot of related colleges that have specialized research Ph.D. programs.
The University of Madras functions with four major campuses with a total of 68 departments, both in study and research. Such departments are then clustered into 18 different schools, each specialising in certain fields of study. Such a systematic academic framework tends to show the determination of the school to develop higher learning and academic performance. Throughout its history, the University of Madras has stood the test of time as one of the major educational and research institutes, keeping itself abreast with the dynamically changing academic requirements of society, ever since it retains its name of excellence.
