The University of Madras was founded in 1857 and is one of India's most prestigious public state universities, and the first university in the state of Tamil Nadu, based in Chennai. It is commonly considered the mother institution of some of the older universities in South India, and has been influential in the formation of higher education within the region. Its jurisdiction has been limited over the years to the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Kancheepuram primarily because of the establishment of other universities and changes in the administrative area of education in the state.

With these developments, the University of Madras has consistently expanded its academic and research activities. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs with a large network of affiliated institutions throughout its jurisdiction. They are not only institutions that provide quality teaching but also play a major role in research in many fields like Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Management, and Technology. An important feature of the academic climate in the university is the versatility in research, where there are a lot of related colleges that have specialized research Ph.D. programs.

Madras University Highlights 2026

The University of Madras functions with four major campuses with a total of 68 departments, both in study and research. Such departments are then clustered into 18 different schools, each specialising in certain fields of study. In these institutions, students can access postgraduate courses, full-time and part-time PhD courses and diploma courses, and certificate courses. Such a systematic academic framework tends to show the determination of the school to develop higher learning and academic performance.
