The great nationalist leader Madan Mohan Malviya, with the help of the Maharaja of Darbhanga Rameshwar Singh, Sunder Lal and the British theosophical Annie Besant, founded Banaras Hindu University in 1916. The university used to be Central Hindu College and was conceptualised with a revolutionary perspective of being a university of Indians built by Indians, which would serve to be precedent-setting in assimilating between East and West.
The Banaras Hindu University campus is located on 1300 acres, built on the land given by Kashi Naresh, and it is one of the largest university campuses within India. BHU is also the biggest residential university in Asia, having more than 30,000 students on its campus who comprise an active learning, research and cultural exchange environment. Being a conventional bridge-campus university, BHU provides normal classroom-based education with direct contact between a student and the faculty, which offers a full immersion in education.
Over the decades, the BHU has developed into a complex institution of higher learning that functions as a normal institute with in-campus modes of study. The academic departments at Banaras Hindu University are organised into various units with different levels of independence and budgets, including institutes, faculties, departments, special chairs, interdisciplinary schools, and special centres. The university operates six institutes, and the Indian Institute of Technology Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) was founded on the basis of the Institute of Technology set up at BHU.
The learning environment within the BHU campus offers world-leading libraries, whereby laboratories are fully equipped, research facilities, as well as cultural centres, are also available to the students. Residentiality of the university makes sure that students get full-fledged exposure to academic and cultural events and chances of complete personality development through the various extracurricular activities, sports and cultural events held in the university all through the year.
This has made BHU one of the monuments of the vision of Malaviya, who wished to see his university make a contribution to the intellectual and cultural renaissance of India. The university offers the most diversified courses like UG, PG, and Diploma courses in all disciplines, such as Humanities, Social Science, Technology, Medicine, Science, Fine Arts, among others.
Study entry in these courses is built on an entrance test directed by the university, and thus, the students are selected on a merit basis. BHU remains one of the leading higher education centres in India that upholds its standards of high scientific teachings, research work, and literature without sacrificing its importance in the education culture by adhering to its conventional on-campus educational system.
