Burdwan University was established by the government of West Bengal on 15th June 1960. It has an interesting history as it originated at a time when the Zamindari system was gone. Uday Chand Mahtab, the representative of the last of Burdwan Raj, was extremely generous when he gave away almost all the property of Burdwan to the state. This was done along with the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who brought the institution into reality.
Originally, there were 6 postgraduate departments and 30 undergraduate colleges in three districts. It has grown at a rapid rate since then. It is today functioning with 39 departments, 234 faculties and 74 constituent colleges, becoming one of the most extensive educational institutes in Eastern India.
The university serves three districts, Birbhum, Burdwan (East and West), hence it is a regional centre for higher education in the state of West Bengal. Rajbati, the old palace of the Barddhamana Maharaja, is also the venue of administrative work, which enhances the historical attraction to the institution.
