Two points the listing sites skip:

  • The Deputy Chief Chemist post is reserved for OBC (NCL). General, SC, ST and EWS candidates cannot be appointed against it.
  • PwBD categories are listed as suitability, not as reserved seats. Relaxation follows Government of India directives.

The number of posts is provisional and can change with the company's actual requirement.

Oil India Eligibility Criteria 2026

Deputy Chief Chemist Eligibility

  •  Postgraduate degree in chemistry of a minimum of 2 years' duration with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA.
  •  Physics, chemistry, and mathematics must have been studied at the graduation level.
  • Minimum 9 years of post-qualification relevant work experience as a chemist in drilling or workover operations, as a drilling fluid specialist, or in line functional executive work.
  •  Oil and gas sector experience is preferred.

Deputy Chief Engineer (Reservoir) Eligibility

Either route works:

  • Bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering of a minimum of 4 years' duration with at least 65% marks, plus 9 years of experience.
  • Master's degree in Petroleum Engineering or Petroleum Technology of a minimum of 2 years' duration with at least 60% marks, along with a 4-year Bachelor's degree in Engineering in any discipline, plus 9 years of experience.

The experience must be as a reservoir engineer or in line functional executive work. Upstream oil and gas experience is preferred.

Economist Eligibility

  • Postgraduate degree in economics or Business Economics with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA.
  • Experience as an economist or in line functional executive work: 9 years for Grade D, 13 years for Grade E, and 17 years for Grade F.
  • The experience should cover areas such as macroeconomic analysis, sector policy or regulatory research, economic modelling with econometric software, project evaluation, and data analysis.

You apply for one grade, and OIL scrutinizes your application against that grade's requirement.

Qualification Rules for All Posts

  • Nomenclature is strict. No variation in the name of the degree from what the advert prescribes is accepted.
  • Distance and part-time degrees are eligible, provided they are recognized by the relevant statutory authority for appointment to posts and services under the Central Government.
  • Duration matters: a Bachelor's degree in engineering must be of at least 4 years, and any postgraduate degree or diploma at least 2 years.
  • No rounding off of percentage. Convert CGPA to percentage only by your institute's own norms.
  • Age proof is accepted only from a birth certificate or a matriculation certificate, admit card or marksheet. No other document is considered.
  •  Only Indian nationals can apply.

Oil India Age Limit 2026

This is where most job sites get it wrong. There is no single 49-year limit. The limit changes by post and grade, measured as on 10 October 2026.

Post

Upper age limit

Deputy Chief Chemist

42 years

Deputy Chief Engineer (Reservoir)

37 years on the Bachelor's route, 39 years on the Master's route

Economist, Grade D

39 years

Economist, Grade E

44 years

Economist, Grade F

49 years

Relaxations:

  • Ex-Servicemen: 5 years.
  • PwBD candidates: as per Government of India directives.
  • PhD in the relevant discipline: 3 years.
  • Candidates ordinarily domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 1989: 5 years, with a domicile certificate.
  • OIL's internal candidates: upper limit of 54 years.

Two clarifications worth reading twice:

  • The 2-year benefit for holding a postgraduate qualification is already built into the numbers above, so do not add it again.
  • After every applicable relaxation, the upper age can never cross 54 years for any candidate.

Who Can Count Their Work Experience

The experience rule filters out more applicants than the degree rule does.

What counts

  • Full-time work in the executive cadre, acquired after the date of the qualifying degree.
  • Employment in Central or State Government departments, PSUs, autonomous bodies, or private companies, whether permanent, fixed-term or contractual.
  • Time spent as a graduate engineer trainee, executive trainee, or management trainee after qualifying.

What does not count

  • Academic, teaching, research, training, fellowship, and stipend-based work.
  • JRF, SRF, PhD scholar, research associate, project associate or assistant, teaching or research assistant, post-doctoral fellow, visiting or guest faculty, and consultants on retainership.
  • Part-time, ad hoc, honorary, apprenticeship, internship and project or consultancy engagements of any kind.

Two extra filters people miss

  • If you are in regular Government or PSU employment, you need at least 2 years in the next lower pay scale as on the cut-off date.
  • If you are in the private sector, your employer must have a minimum annual turnover of ₹500 crore, and you must produce proof of it.

Also Live: Oil India Contractual Posts at Duliajan

Alongside this executive advert, OIL has a second live notification for the engagement of Contractual Electrician and Contractual Associate Engineer (Electrical) at Field Headquarters, Duliajan. It closes on 7 October 2026 at 11:59 PM. Past editions of the same advert asked for Class 10 with an ITI in the electrician trade for the electrician role and a 3-year diploma in electrical engineering with an electrical supervisor's Certificate of competency for the associate engineer role, both with one year of experience. If you hold an ITI or a diploma, that notification is the one to open, and the current PDF is on the same Current Openings page.

Should You Apply for Oil India Recruitment 2026?

Only if you already hold the exact degree and 9 or more years of full-time executive experience in a directly comparable role. Three seats, one interview and no written test mean the shortlist will be small and the interview bar high. Freshers, diploma holders, and candidates below the experience mark have nothing to gain from applying here, and a rejected application still costs a day of paperwork.

One line in the advertisement is worth noting for anyone studying while working: OIL accepts qualifications earned through distance learning or part-time mode, as long as they are recognized by the statutory authority for appointment to posts under the Central Government. Maharatna PSUs stating this in writing is the clearest answer to the question working professionals ask most about online and part-time degrees.

If you are working and want to understand which approved online or working professional programs count for government and PSU posts, College Vidya's counsellors can help you check approvals and pick the right fit. [Internal link: relevant course comparison page]
