Part Time PhD Eligibility & Duration

To be eligible for a Part-Time PhD in India, a candidate needs a relevant master's degree, a qualifying entrance score, and an employer No Objection Certificate. The standard criteria are:

• A master's degree in a relevant discipline, usually with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD categories)
• A qualifying score in UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE, or a university-conducted PhD entrance test
• A personal interview or research aptitude assessment after clearing the written stage
• A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the current employer confirming permission and support
• A research proposal outlining the intended area of study
• 2 to 3 years of relevant work experience.

From 2024, UGC has moved toward using NET scores for PhD admission in place of separate university entrance exams, so the exact entrance route should be confirmed with each university.

However, meeting these requirements can be challenging for working professionals, which is why many opt for an Online DBA with flexible, practice-oriented admission criteria. Here are the eligibility requirements-

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with 3 to 5 years of professional experience, or
• A master’s degree from an accredited university, with or without work experience.
• No entrance examination required in most international online DBA programs.
• Selection based on academic background, professional profile, and interview (if applicable).

A Part-Time PhD generally takes 5 to 7 years to complete due to its academic depth, mandatory coursework, and extended research timeline. Progress depends on research approvals, supervision availability, and institutional requirements. An Online DBA, on the other hand, is designed for working professionals and can usually be completed in around three years. The flexible structure allows learners to study a few hours per week without pausing their careers, while focusing on applied, practice-based research aligned with real business challenges.
