IIM Amritsar was established with the support of the Ministry of Education which was earlier known as the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. The institute is supported by the government of India. It is the 15th member of the IIM Family. This institution was inaugurated by Surjit Singh Rakhra, who was then Minister of Higher Education & language.

IIMAm welcomed its first batch in the year 2015-2017. It was established in the year 2015. It has a beautiful campus in Amritsar, which is a religious place of the Sikh community, the land of the Golden Temple. It runs through the Punjab Institute of Technology Building which is just 5 km from the Railway station, and 10 km away from the airport, hence commuting from the institute to other places is easy. IIM Amritsar offers postgraduate and doctoral programs in a wide range of specializations.

IIM Amritsar offers On-campus and Executive courses in business management. The institute offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) designed to offer advanced knowledge and expertise in business management. Students can choose a specialization in MBA in Business Analytics (MBA-BA) and Human Resources (MBA-HR). It also supports the Executive MBA (EMBA) program which is designed for experienced working professionals. The program is offered in online mode with requirements of 5 campus visits in 2 years. 

IIM Amritsar offers a two-year MSc in Data Science and Management in collaboration with IIT Ropar. This program blends advanced expertise in data analytics with management principles. Apart from from master’s program, IIM Amritsar offers a Doctoral program in a wide range of disciplines. It offers doctoral programs in Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, Accounting and Control, Economics, Operations Management and Quantitative Techniques, Information Technology and Computational Systems, and Strategy. Additionally, it also offers an Integrated B.Tech. and MBA (IBM) program.

The institute is highly focused on working on research projects and taking new initiatives. The institute is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education and, the Association of Indian Universities, it has the status of an autonomous institution, has been ranked by the National Institution Ranking Framework, is a prestigious member of the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and Association of MBA.
