The Indian Institute of Technology is the finest technical institute in India and in the Union Budget of 2014-15, the Honourable Finance Minister of India announced the establishment of IIT Jammu followed by a list of four more IITs i.e. Kerala, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

IIT Jammu is an autonomous institute that is situated in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India, and was established on 6th August 2016. The first batch of IIT Jammu was placed on the campus of Paloura, Jammu. Initially, IIT Jammu was under the mentorship of IIT Delhi. IIT Jammu was also entitled as an institution of National Importance by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India in 2016.

IIT Jammu offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and executive (online) programs in multiple specializations. The main campus of IIT Jammu Online has been allotted 400 acres of land but Phase 1-A of the permanent campus is operational and consists of 25 acres, whereas Phase 1-B and 1-C are under construction. However the campus has all the required facilities a student needs in their academic life such as a hostel, accommodation, sports facility, library, and dispensary, and all mandatory facilities are available at the campus for students' comfort.

The curriculum of every program follows the New Education Policy and the study material of every program is revised and updated regularly. The curriculum includes hands-on engineering skills and practical knowledge to make students compatible in the global competitive market. IIT Jammu also ranks 56th under the engineering category of NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework).
