Bachelor of Technology or B.Tech is that UG course in India which is pursued by maximum freshers who have completed class 12th in Science stream. It is a 4-year technical course which is quite difficult to study. But what is more difficult is to get admission to a B.Tech program. There is fierce competition among students to get admission owing to our country’s spectacular population.
A lot of students who are not able to score good in the entrance exams end up wasting their time by taking drop years to prepare and appear again for the entrances like JEE and other state-level entrance exams. So many young minds abandon their dream of becoming engineers.
But what if I tell you that you can get admission to a B.Tech program without giving an entrance exam. However, this is possible only when in place of dropping a year you pursue a Polytechnic Diploma course or B.Sc or BCA (for Computer Science Engineering).
After completing a Polytechnic Diploma/ B.Sc/ BCA, you are eligible for a B.Tech lateral entry program without giving an entrance exam. Many prestigious and renowned Indian universities offer B.Tech lateral entry courses without entrance exams, to students who have completed their polytechnic diploma or a relevant UG degree.
B.Tech lateral entry course means that eligible students can get admission directly into the second year of the program. So, with a B.Tech lateral admission, you start directly with the 2nd year of the B.Tech course. So, the duration of your BTech After Diploma reduces to 3 years only with lateral admission.
The duration of a B.Tech lateral entry course is typically 3 years. Some universities might extend a semester depending on their curriculum, making the duration 3.5 years. But generally the course lasts 3 years that are divided into 6 semesters.
To be eligible for direct second year admission to a B.Tech course without entrance exam, you must have completed a polytechnic diploma or a bachelor’s degree in relevant subjects, from a recognised higher education institution. You must have scored at least 50% marks in aggregate to be eligible.
The B.Tech lateral admission fees structure is less than a regular B.Tech program. This is because you have to pay the fees for only 3 years instead of 4 years. So, the average fee for a B.Tech lateral entry program in India is around INR 4-8 lakhs for private institutions. The fee is a little less in government colleges.
For admission to B.Tech direct second year admission, you will have to fill an application form for the course at your chosen university. Along with the application form, you will have to submit your academic and personal identification documents.

B.Tech programs are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of technical concepts and principles. This involves a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application of that knowledge through hands-on experiences. The practical component typically includes laboratory work, workshops, internships, and project-based learning. This practical training helps students develop the necessary skills and competencies required in their chosen field of engineering.
It's important to note that while the government encourages a balanced approach to B.Tech education, it recognizes the value and potential of online learning. Thus, institutions are permitted to offer part-time B.Tech programs for diploma holders, ensuring that practical aspects are appropriately addressed through on-campus or practical training components.
Part-time B.Tech courses are also popularly known as B.Tech for working professionals courses because it is a course that also allows working professionals to pursue the degree without leaving their jobs and without giving an entrance exam.
