Transitioning from a full-time PhD program to a part-time or flexible format involves meeting specific criteria. First and foremost, it is essential to complete all your residency coursework prior to submitting your application for the transfer. This ensures that you have a solid academic foundation before altering your study schedule.

Secondly, passing all comprehensive exams is a prerequisite. These exams are critical milestones in your PhD journey, demonstrating that you possess the necessary knowledge and skills to proceed with your research. Additionally, you must secure approval from your supervisor, who can provide valuable guidance on whether this transition aligns with your academic and research goals.

Another requirement is obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the head of the institution you wish to join. This document is crucial as it signifies that your transition to the part-time program is endorsed by the institution's administration.

Moreover, be prepared for the possibility of incurring additional fees or charges. These costs are determined by the institution and should be clarified prior to making the switch. It's vital to budget for these expenses as you transition your study format.

Lastly, note that the request to change your program format can only be made once during your PhD tenure. After you have shifted from the full-time to the part-time or flexible format (or vice versa), you will not have the option to revert to your original format. This rule highlights the importance of carefully considering your decision to ensure it aligns with your long-term academic and personal goals.

If you want to switch from a full-time PhD to a part-time or flexible PhD program, you need to fulfill the following requirements:

  • You must have completed your residency coursework before filling out the application for a transfer to a part-time PhD
  • You have passed all the comprehensive exams
  • You have received your supervisor's approval for the same
  • You need to submit a No Objection Certificate from the head of the Institution that you want to join
  • You might also need to pay some additional amount as per the guidelines set by the institution you wish to join

You will be allowed to request for such provisions only once in the tenure of your PhD. Once you are transferred from a full-time PhD to a part-time or flexible PhD program or vice versa, you will not be allowed to move back to your original format of PhD.
