JNU PhD Admission Based on UGC NET Scores

In March 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) made a historic decision to change the admission process for PhD admission at the University from the academic session 2024-25. Unlike, the traditional phd admission process where universities had the liberty to conduct their admission tests, UGC has decided to use UGC NET/ CSIR UGC NET scores for PhD admissions.

To follow the latest amendments of UGC in PhD admission, Jawaharlal Nehru University has issued a notification in April 2024.  JNU has accepted the amendments of UGC and will allow PhD admission based on UGC NET/CSIR UGC NET scores.

Now JNU will conduct entrance exams in only those PhD programmes where NET examination is not conducted by UGC/CSIR. All other admissions in PhD programs at JNU will be made based on UGC NET/CSIR NET.

Info-Only 0.5% of candidates for “JRF and Assistant Professor,” whereas 6% of candidates for “Only Assistant Professor” clear the UGC NET.In its notification in 2024, JNU has prescribed three categories for PhD admission eligibility.

The categories for JNU PhD admission eligibility based on UGC NET/CSIR UGC NET scores are mentioned below:

  • Category 1: JNU reserved category 1 for the students who have qualified UGC NET/CSIR UGC NET with JRF (Junior Research Fellowship). As per the existing admission norms where JRF students were exempted from the entrance exam and full weightage was given on viva voice will get the same facility. Students with JRF qualifications will be considered for PhD admission with 100 percent weightage in Viva Voice. H however, these students can also seek admission based on their NET scores.
  • Category 2: Category 2 PhD admission at JNU is reserved for the candidates who have qualified for Assistant Professorship without JRF in the UGC NET/ CSIR UGC NET exam. Students falling under this category will now replace the entrance exam. These students are eligible for PhD admission based on their NET scores and viva voice. The weightage for NET score will be 70 percent and Viva voice will be 30 percent.
  • Category 3: Category 3 is reserved for the students who have neither qualified for the Junior Research fellowship nor Assistant Professorship. These students are also eligible for PhD admission at JNU based on their NET scores and viva voice. Here the weight will remain the same as category 2 which is 70:30 respectively.

Additional Information

  • The NET scores for the purpose of PhD admission in JNU will be valid for one year only.
  • If the students fail to get admission within one year of the declaration of UGC NET results, they will have to reappear for the UGC NET/ CSIR UGC NET exams.
  • JNU may conduct entrance exams for PhD programs where the NET exam is not conducted by UGC/CSIR.

If you are a working professional and do have enough time to prepare and crack the UGC/CSIR NET to get admission to PhD can still pursue a globally recognized Online DBA (Doctorate of Business Administration) degree.

Online DBA is a highly flexible and accessible degree that is equivalent to on-campus PhD programs. Online DBA is designed for working professionals to equip them with advanced business knowledge and expertise without requiring them to quit their current jobs.
