M.Phil. Programme Admission Guidelines - Is it Possible In 2024?

Kopal Srivastava Oct 17, 2024 1K Reads

The UGC stopped the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in all universities and thus is no longer considered valid in India. You can not be admitted to the MPhil program anymore, and hence, admissions to the MPhil program in 2024 have not started. This is in line with NEP 2020. Now, if one wants to continue academically after graduation, then postgraduate candidates have to target a PhD directly without the need to pursue an MPhil program.

This involves removing the MPhil program within a broader reform to streamline higher education, encourage greater research through doctoral studies, and focus on PhDs by universities to develop research capabilities and academic expertise, hence a stepping stone for teaching roles or advanced research roles. Since the MPhil degree program is no longer valid, all the higher education institutions have been written notice by the UGC to stop the MPhil degree programs. The decision came with the announcement of the National Education Policy 2020, and the universities have been asked not to take any students into MPhil courses during the 2023-24 session.

Most universities in India, except Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, have long stopped the MPhil courses. The UGC released an Official notification declaring that as per Regulation No. 14 of UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of PhD Degree) Regulations 2022, MPhil degree course provisions are banned. This is part of efforts made by the government toward the promotion of the PhD courses and to promote advanced research and higher academic qualification processes. The UGC has also emphasized the fact that many universities continue with courses that are not acknowledged by the commission despite the explicit regulation.

According to the Ministry of Education, no less than 140 new private universities have emerged in the last five years. The leader of this list is Gujarat, followed closely by Maharashtra and then Madhya Pradesh. This is the expansion that should fill the gap with more choices for higher education options, but it is distressing to see unapproved ones.

What is an alternative to an M.Phil? Program Admission Procedure?

An MPhil degree is technically placed in the category of a master's degree; however, it may be more similar to a doctoral program in terms of intensity and scope, at least as far as its focus on research and advanced theory. The degree holders can now proceed to continue their higher education by going for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). This would be an excellent option for those who are keen on entering the realm of academia or are willing to dedicate themselves to intensive research.

A postgraduate can proceed to a Ph.D. wherein he or she will specialize even further in an area that they have chosen to specialize in. This advanced study is believed to equip him or her with adequate knowledge and expertise regarding the subject to add original research into the field. For those who dream of becoming masters or professors, and for those who would like to take control of new research, this would be the best postgraduate course. A master's shifts to a Ph.D. that indeed allows door opening into higher-level positions in academics and professional settings towards a fulfilling and influential career.

What is the Admission Guidelines for a PhD Program?

As an MPhil is discontinued it is not worth it to know the MPhil application procedure and hence I have given the steps to its alternative. If you are willing to apply to a PhD program, then you must follow the given steps below to apply to a PhD program.

The PhD admissions process in India is broadly outlined below:

  • Research Universities and Programs: Identify universities or research institutes that correspond to your domain of interest and have PhD programs of your choice. Assess faculty profiles, ongoing research projects, and program details.
  • Check Eligibility: Ensure that you meet the minimum eligibility criteria; the eligibility is generally a Master's degree with a good GPA or 50 percent marks. Some programs also need specific expertise or prior research experience.
  • Prepare Application Materials: Collect all your academic degrees, a research proposal, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, and any entrance exams you may need.
  • Submission of Application: You can present your application yourself or through an online portal, depending upon the system the institution follows and its deadlines.
  • Entrance Exams (if necessary): Some universities have entrance exams, like GATE or CAT, where a report has to be analyzed to know whether the PhD applicant is fully prepared.
  • Interviews and Evaluations: If your application makes it to the shortlist, you may be invited for an interview where you can discuss your research proposal and background with the potential supervisors.
  • Admission Decision: The admissions committee will go through your application, and you will be notified of whether you have been accepted, waitlisted, or rejected.
  • Enrolment and Orientation: Following acceptance, complete all enrollment formalities by paying fees and submitting documents. Attend an orientation program that details the program and accesses on campus.

What is a PhD Program?

The highest qualification you can achieve, therefore, is a PhD, also called a doctoral research degree, it includes independent, in-depth research that ends with the production of a thesis that can then be submitted for publication. On average, the full-time study required for a PhD will take three to five years to complete, including making some new and original contribution to your field of study.

It often seems mysterious or intimidating when considering PhDs. Are they for geniuses only? Or do you need to find something groundbreaking to earn a PhD? Will you automatically become an academic? And is it only for those working in universities?

Even the full title, "Doctor of Philosophy," sounds somewhat mysterious. Do you become a doctor? Yes, but not a medical one. Do you have to study philosophy? No, unless that's your field of choice.

What does PhD stand for?

What, exactly, does PhD stand for? It stands for Doctor of Philosophy. In other words, it's one of the highest academic degrees you can achieve. The term is derived from the Latin term "Philosophiae Doctor." In this instance, "philosophy" does not have the meaning that the branch of knowledge known as philosophy connotes.

What are Doctorate Programs?

A doctorate is an advanced degree that qualifies a person as an expert in his or her field by making new and meaningful contributions toward the advancement of knowledge. When you earn your doctorate, you receive the title of "Doctor," which is where this name originated.

Whether there is a difference between a doctorate and a PhD isn't much, since the PhD also is one kind of doctorate.

The PhD is the most widely offered kind of doctorate at almost all universities in the world. Other varieties are normally more specialized to specific fields of professional applications.

In simple words, all PhDs are doctorates, but not all doctorates are PhDs. Also Read | What Is Doctoral Degree?

What are the differences between a Doctorate program and a PhD Program?

A professional doctorate and a PhD are both considered top-level degrees and are also known as doctorate degrees. Each is also able to give a significant boost to your career since it holds the highest formal education you can have in one's field. The Bureau of Labor Statistics determines that a doctoral degree tends to earn about 20% more per week compared with those holding a master's degree.

Thus, important in choosing between a PhD and a professional doctorate should be your goals. A PhD would seem to be more geared towards new research, data analysis, and theory evaluation, while a professional doctorate is essentially about applying research to solve problems in the real world and creating effective practices in their profession.

Is one considered to be over the other? No. Both professional doctorates and PhDs are the highest you can achieve academically. Professional doctorates encompass degrees such as Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), Doctor of Education (EdD), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Alternatively, you might consider a PhD in fields such as Management, Education, Nursing, or Public Health.

This is the focus and purpose of the two degrees. PhDs target the development of the field through theoretical research and the creation of new knowledge, while professional doctorates target application in real-world problem-solving towards the best practice.

Can we Pursue a Doctorate Program Online?

A DBA, or Doctor of Business Administration can be earned through online learning. This is a flexible doctorate that can help working professionals improve their knowledge and skills in business. Because the student can maintain his or her professional obligations with this kind of academic structure, it is ideal for those who cannot enter a traditional on-campus academic program.

An online DBA program sets out to make you apply business theory to problems in the real world and hence will make you an industry leader. You'll be equipped with advanced skills in decision-making, strategic thinking, and research. You can apply the information you learn directly to problems in your industry, and as such, a program usually would include coursework in finance, marketing, management, as well as business strategy. In addition, the program usually will have a research project in which you'll address a specific problem in your industry.

An online DBA is very practical in orientation compared to a PhD, and it's not designed for people who plan on working in pure academics or research-focused roles; rather, it's suited for practicing professionals wishing to improve their careers as managers or consultants.

An Online DBA would enable individuals with the knowledge and skills that make them competent enough to lead, innovate, and drive change in today's rapidly moving business environment. It's a qualification wherein one is equipping oneself to move to senior management roles or expanding businesspeople's expertise in any sector.

Should I opt for an Online DBA or a PhD in Management?

A DBA or a PhD in Management is one's interest and professional goals. Both are the highest doctorate with prestige both within the academic and business worlds, but they are certainly not one thing.

An online DBA is a professional doctorate, while a PhD is an academic doctorate. The research is advanced in both cases, but their emphasis differs. DBA programs are targeted at solving real-world business and organizational problems. This means that students undertaking research are directly applying that to business solutions. This degree is perfect for someone looking to grow from being a manager into a director role or wanting to advance positions in business consulting or leadership roles. Many graduates go to teach at universities after completing a DBA, but their focus goes towards practical business solutions.

While PhD research is more theoretical, PhD students stress the development or expansion of theories, filling gaps in the existing body of knowledge, and addressing theoretical issues in their area of specialization. If you want to become a college professor or work in a think tank or research institute then a PhD in Management is more appropriate for you.

What is the Admission Procedure for an Online DBA Doctorate?

As the MPhil is discontinued it is not worth it for you to know the application procedure for the MPhil program so I have mentioned the steps to apply to its alternative and the alternative is an Online DBA.  To apply to an Online DBA, you must have to follow the given steps below.

Check Eligibility:

  • Access the University Website: Proceed to the website of the university that is conducting the respective program.
  • Sign-up: Sign up with a valid email ID. After signing up, log in with your username and password.
  • Filling out the Application Form: After you log in to your account, fill up the application form by providing all required details as per the form.
  • Uploading of Required Documents: Ensure you upload your documents and identification as the university requires for an academic degree.
  • Pay Application Fees: One can pay through an online application fee.
  • Confirmation of Admission: Once your payment is successful, you will receive a confirmation, and upon completing the previous steps, the university will confirm.

Online DBA vs. PhD Curriculum

Although both the online DBA and PhD in Management include coursework in developing a deep understanding of business and management theory, the approach differs.

Online DBA Curriculum: Emphasizes the application of business theories to real-world problems to solve practical dilemmas. For online DBA students, the focus is on ethics, leadership, and practical solutions that directly affect businesses and organizations, all geared at solving business-related issues to have a positive effect on social issues by applying practice-based research ideas.

PhD Program Curriculum The program is more theoretical, trying to be as knowledgeable as possible. PhD focuses on the history and development of business management and its concurrence with human society. Management theories and system-thinking principles presently conceived are examined by PhDs from a more comprehensive interdisciplinary view, often seeking to add new theoretical contributions.

Online DBA vs. PhD Course Structure

The programs both progress with courses in business as well as research. However, the difference comes in at research applies.

  • Online DBA Program: Students of online DBA usually enroll for doctoral study to develop a solution that will solve a practical business problem. It will involve original research as well as its immediate application in solving challenges experienced in the businesses.
  • PhD Program: PhD students make preparations for the intended dissertation to address an identified gap in theoretical knowledge. Their research has an impact on the accumulation of theoretical knowledge so that understanding what is known about business management occurs rather than applying it to try to solve practical problems.

Career Tracks: Online DBA vs. PhD

Though both degrees can lead to advanced career opportunities, in general, the career tracks differ:

  • PhD Careers: Ph.D. graduates follow career tracks such as academics, either teaching in a university or doing research. Moreover, they would use their expertise to eventually move into positions like policymaker advocates or leadership roles in organizations.
  • Online DBA Careers: More likely to find themselves at the helm of top management positions in the corporate world, others might work as consultants, entrepreneurs, and business owners. Some of the holders of the DBA degree also teach with a focus on applying business knowledge rather than conducting theoretical research.

Overall, the online DBA and PhD are both doctorate degrees that can be beneficial for professional career advancement. Blithe the degrees add the “Dr” title before your name. Your choice should depend on whether you're more interested in academic research and theory (PhD) or practical business solutions (DBA).

Conclusion

As can be seen, both an online DBA and PhD are prestigious doctorate degrees, though they differ in focus and career paths. The ideal candidate for a PhD in Management would therefore be interested in the development of academic theory, teaching, and advancing into research institutions, while a DBA focuses on solving real-world business problems and is better suited to those looking to lead a company or to consult with others. Both are very successful careers, but the choice between these two degrees must be decided based on professional goals and preferences between more academic research and practical business application.
