What Is ME/M.Tech?

ME (Masters of Engineering) or M.Tech (Masters of Technology) is a 2-year postgraduate professional degree in engineering. The aspirants are required to have a bachelor’s degree in technology (BE/B.Tech) for joining the M.Tech course with a minimum of 50% marks from a recognized university. The course can be accomplished based on a full-time or part-time course depending upon the preference of the student.

The student can choose any of them according to their flexibility. Both the full-time and part-time courses are valid in the job market. The students can apply for higher studies (PhD) after completing the M.Tech course. The Master’s of Technology course is designed to train the students in various aspects of technology. The course will provide a detailed understanding of upgraded technology to the students.

The students will learn many skills like communication skills, project management skills, creative skills along with the studies that will help them to enhance their career. The M.Tech course will focus on educating the students in such a manner so that they can be professional technologists in the future. The students will also learn how to convert theoretical knowledge into practical life.

However, the greatest advantage of an M.Tech course is that it gives you deeper knowledge of specific topics and domains within a single specialisation. The benefit of this is you will be able to get advanced job roles within your role, which automatically means that you get paid higher than before. In this case, a part-time M.Tech is a lot more beneficial because you can pursue it along with your job. So, a part-time M.Tech course is your chance at getting that long-awaited and much-needed promotion.

M.Tech admission follows the entrance-based criteria for admission. Before applying to the Masters of Technology course in any university the students need to clear an entrance test. The most popular entrance exam for M.Tech admissions in a top university is GATE. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is an India-based entrance exam for admission in M.Tech course.

Other state bases or universities based entrance exams for admission in M.Tech courses are AP PGECT, TS PGECT, VITMEE, Karnatka PGECT, OJEE, TENSET, etc. The student must clear one of the entrance exams to get admission to the M.Tech course.

However, if you decide to take admission to a part-time M.Tech program, then you do not need to give an entrance exam. You get direct admission based on your merit in your last qualifying examination (BE/B.Tech). At some universities, it is compulsory for you to have full-time work experience of at least 1-2 years. This is not a compulsion in all universities so even fresh B.Tech graduates are eligible for a part-time M.Tech course.

M.Tech degree will help the students to become professional after completing the BTech. In some top industries, a Masters’s degree is required for recruitment. After completing the BTech course student can get the job but not at a high level. M.Tech’s degree will provide them a high-class job and good salary packages.

M.Tech Courses Details

Masters of technology courses focus on training the students in the technology field. The curriculum of the M.Tech course is designed to give detailed information to the students and train them in domain-specific skills to become a professional.

The main subjects of the M.Tech course are mathematical background, advanced programming principles, networking, embedded systems, graphics, and visualization. The course specifically focuses on a particular specialisation and gives you knowledge and the expertise of the same in excessive details. The aim of an M.Tech course is to develop professionals into engineers with complete expertise in their specialisation.

The students can also pursue higher studies after finishing the M.Tech course. They can apply for a Ph.D. in any technology-related branch which they find interesting. The M.Tech course also opens up many job opportunities in the academic industries like teaching jobs in colleges.

M.Tech Eligibility Criteria?

The eligibility criteria for taking admission vary in different universities. The basic criteria are the student must have completed a bachelor’s degree in BE/B.Tech (10+2+4) from a recognized university by UGC / AICTE with a minimum percentage of 50%.

In some universities, the admission will be taken on an entrance base examination in which the student needs to clear any state or country based entrance exam related to engineering to get the admission. GATE is one of the popular entrance exams given by the students for M.Tech admission in the top IIT university.

There are many state level and national level exams rather than GATE that is given by the students to take admission in top engineering universities for M.Tech courses.

In the case of a part-time M.Tech program, you do not need to give an entrance exam. The only eligibility criteria is that you must have a BE/B.Tech degree from a recognised institution and with at least 50% total marks. For some universities, the eligibility criteria also includes the candidates to have work experience.

M.Tech Admission Process

Every university has a different admission process for the M.Tech course. Primarily the student needs to clear the graduation in engineering. After that, they have to apply for the engineering-based entrance exam.

The cut-off list is declared after the entrance exam result then the student will choose the college according to their marks. All the process is the online-based process.

The student will apply online for the entrance exam and they will check their result online. After this, the student will take online admission to the universities according to their marks.

In case of part-time M.Tech, the admission procedure is very simple as you can complete it online. There is no need for an entrance exam or to even go to the university. You just have to fill up the online application form through the official website of the university. Along with the application form, you also have to upload your documents and pay the online registration fees. The university will check your documents to verify your eligibility and then contact you for further admission formalities.

Master of Technology (M.Tech) Fees

Different colleges have different fee structures depending upon the faculty, infrastructure, and facilities that they are providing to the students during the course. M.Tech from regular college fees is a bit higher than the distance universities.

The estimated amount of fees charged by regular universities for the M.Tech course is 1L – 2L per year. So, the total fee is around INR 3-4 lakhs. The students have an option to pay the regular college fees semester wise, year wise or as a one-time payment. The students can also choose the EMI option to pay the fees to complete the M.Tech engineering course.

A part-time M.Tech, however, offers a lot more affordable fee structure. The total fees of a part-time M.Tech program is within the range of INR 50,000 to 2 lakh for the complete course. Part-time M.Tech is quite economical because you have the option of pursuing a job along with the course which can be a constant income source for you even when you are completing your higher education. So, there is no financial burden because of the less fees.

Part-Time M.Tech Top Universities

There are many universities in India that offer the regular M.Tech program but there are only a few that offer part time M.Tech or popularly known as M.Tech WILP course. This is because part-time M.Tech courses are delivered in a hybrid mode with online + offline classes. So, it is very important to check that the university you choose is able to provide you all the necessary facilities. This is why you must only take admission to a govt. approved university.

Following is a list of some of the best universities in the country that are UGC/AICTE approved to offer part-time M.Tech courses:

M.Tech Duration

M.Tech course is a 2-years post-graduation course of engineering subdivided into 4 semesters. Each semester is for 6 months. All the topics are covered during these 2 years and we will train the students in the technology field so that they can enhance their career in technical industries.

The minimum duration of part-time M.Tech courses is also 2 years but since these are flexible courses, the universities offer some extra years to complete the course. The maximum duration in such case is around 3-4 years. Also, some universities like SVU offer the course for 2.5 years (5 semesters) as they dedicate an entire semester for industrial training and project work.

M.Tech Distance Education

The distance education M.Tech course is not valid as per the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and University Grant Commission (UGC) guidelines. M.Tech can be pursued through traditional regular classes or hybrid learning education but not in a completely distance learning mode. This is because you need practical learning also in this course which is not possible with distance learning. In place of distance M.Tech, there is part-time M.Tech which is a combination of online and offline learning. The curriculum, subjects, and time duration all are the same.

The Master’s of Technology course is about theoretical as well as practical knowledge. The practical training needs physical appearance and laboratories which is not possible to provide during distance learning M.Tech. Engineering is based on more practical skills with theoretical knowledge so the AICTE and UGC have declared the distance degree invalid.
