Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) was established as 1st self-financing Engineering institute by Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust located in Tamil Nadu in 1984. Later, this trust laid the foundation of Sree Balaji Dental College & Hospital in the year 1989, which was recognized as Deemed to be University in 2002 by the UGC Act 1956 (MHRD).

Later, Bharath Medical College and Hospital (BMCH), Chennai, Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH), Chennai, Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences (SLIMS), Puducherry, Sree Balaji College of Nursing, Chennai, Sree Balaji College of Physiotherapy and Bharath Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) came under the ambit which, today is known as Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research (BIHER). The University is spread over an area of 603 acres of land and has 6 campuses in Tamil Nadu & Puducherry. 

The University is approved by the University Grants Commission along with approval from higher & reputed institutions like AICTE, BCI, COA, INC, DCI, MCI, SIRO, PCI, and many more. This is one of the highest and most reputed institutions that has been ranked by NIRF, QS, ABET, NAAC, NBA, ASSOCHAM, and Global Impact Rankings(GIP).

The University offers courses in regular mode and some in online mode. The undergraduate courses offered to students online mode are Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, and Bachelor of Commerce. The postgraduate course offered to students in online mode is the Master of Commerce.
