Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute is a top-notch University that was established in the year 1987 by Tmt. Kannammal Educational Trust started with the name Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College. Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was started in the year 1988 while Thai Moogambigai Dental College was started in 1991. Later, both colleges got the status of Deemed University in the year 2003 as named Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute by the University Grants Commission of New Delhi & Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India (MHRD, GOI) New Delhi.

The University has been ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework with a Rank 92nd in the University Category and for the Architecture and Planning category it is ranked 27th while in the dental category, this institution is ranked 23rd in India. The University is ranked with the (AICTE)All India Council for Technical Education Certificate The University is accredited by the University Grants Commission and it has been awarded the graded autonomy Status, The UGC Distance Education Bureau also approves it.
