Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology was established in 1987 and started as Sathyabama Engineering College with 3 departments, 3 undergraduate programs, and 14 faculty only. Later in 2001, this institution was named Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology Deemed to be a University that started offering 10 undergraduate and 4 postgraduate programs through 15 departments. In 2012 the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) declared the University in the A category. It started its international research center in 2011 and started its Dental College in 2009.

The institution kept growing and in 2017 got the NAAC A grade. It became a part of the Global Ranking and got the DSIR certification by SIRO. In 2016, it took the revolutionary step, by associating with ISRO in Sathyabama Satelite Launch. It was later ranked in the top 50 universities in 2016 by NIRF. In 2019, the institution inaugurated new schools and UGC Granted the University UGC 12B Status. 

The Institution started the School of Law, School of Pharmacy, School of Nursing, and many more. The Institution got a QS 1 gauge Diamond Rating in 2018. In 2021, the institution got NBA accreditation for its offered 11 programs and in later years in 2019, it started new specialisations. In 2022, the institution was ranked by QS World University Rankings. The Institution got ranked in the Times Impact ranking and later started the Sathyabama Center for Advanced Studies. Till now, the institution has 49 undergraduate and 24 postgraduate programs many PhD programs. It supported 50+ startups as well. The Institution helps the student and their creative and innovative thinking. They have more than 232+ patents granted and many more in line. 

The institution offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses to the students. It provides courses in various disciplines like Technology, Science and Technology, Law, Pharmacy, Dental Sciences, Nursing, Arts Management, Science and Allied health Sciences, and many more. It has been accredited with a grade of A++ by the NAAC (National Accreditation & Assessment Council).  This institution has been known worldwide for its amazing education and facilities. It has been ranked 51st by the NIRF(National International & Ranking Framework) and right from eight continuous years it has been ranked in the top 100 universities. It is ranked in the top 5 national institutions for Innovation for Institution for innovative achievement by ATAL Ranking. 

In 2024 it came up with a new objective to offer education in the distance and online mode through the Center for Distance & Online Education (CDOE) that offers OL (Online Learning) & ODL (Open & Distance learning mode). It has been accredited by the top prestigious institutions like NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework), NBA (National Board of Accreditation), AICTE (All India Council For Technical Education), ARIIA (Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements), MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development), and NAAC (National Assessment & Accreditation Council), and has been ranked with QS and THE rankings. In online mode, it offers various undergraduate & postgraduate courses through various schools and departments like the School of Management Studies and the School of Science & Humanities.
