The Shivaji University was established in 1962 and was named after the great Maratha warrior and founder of the Maratha empire Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The inauguration of the university was led by Dr. Radhakrishnan (President of India) in 1962. The main objective behind the university was to fill up the educational gap in southern Maharashtra and to offer education across the nation, Shivaji University started the Centre of Distance Education.

The distance education offered at Shivaji University is located in Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
